The Philosophy Department at Nanjing University (NJU) is one of the largest and best in China, offering BA, MA, and Ph.D. programs. Our areas of strength include Marxist Philosophy, Chinese Philosophy, Foreign Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and Technology, Logic, Ethics, Religious Studies, Eastern Philosophy and Religious Studies. Our department was ranked top 5 by the Ministry of Education of China in 2012.
Our Department has a long and prestigious tradition. It was founded in 1920 when NJU was known as National Central University because Nanjing was the Capital of China. Since then many distinguished Chinese philosophers had taught here, including Liu Boming, Tang Yongtong, Zong Baihua, Fang Thomé H., Tang Junyi, Mou Zongsan, Chen Shiquan, Ni Qingyuan, Yin Haiguang, Xiong Wei, Chen Chung-Hwan, Miao Litian, Pan Shu, Sun Shuping, Sun Bokui, and so on. The philosophy department was known for its outstanding research on Chinese Philosophy, Buddhism, Ancient Greek Philosophy, Continental Philosophy, and Marxism. It was also known for its engagement in social and political issues.
Prof. Liu Linyuan’s essay “Materialistic Dialectics and Empirical Research” was publicly praised by Mao Zedong. Prof. Hu Fuming was the main author of the essay “Practice Is the Sole Criterion of Truth,” which has been one of the most famous philosophy papers in China.
Our Department offers a B.A. program in philosophy and M.A. and Ph.D. programs in eight divisions of philosophy: Marxism, Chinese Philosophy, Foreign Philosophy, Logic, Ethics, Philosophy of Science & Technology, Religious Studies, Eastern Philosophy and Religion. The Marxism program at NJU is widely regarded as one of the best ones in China. It has been one of the National Key Programs recognized by the Ministry of Education of China.
Our Ph.D. programs have been very successful. The research done by our Ph.D. students is outstanding. Three of our recent Ph.D. graduates received the National Best Dissertation Prize, and seven received Jiangsu Province Best Ph.D. Dissertation Prize. Further, the placement of our Ph.D. program is impressive. Many of our graduates got tenured or tenure-track jobs at top research universities including Peking University and Tsinghua University.
Our B.A. program is also excellent. We have a group of excellent teachers recognized by the Ministry of Education of China as a “National Excellent Teaching Group.” Two of our faculty members received National Quality Courses Funding for their teaching excellence. In addition, all of our graduates got employed or went to graduate schools.
Finally, the Philosophy Department also has visiting scholars and students programs. Foreign students are welcome to apply to both degree programs and visiting programs. The research of our faculty has been widely acclaimed in China. Prof. Hong Xiuping and Prof. Tang Zhengdong were elected as “Chang Jiang Scholar,” the highest academic award issued to an individual in higher education by the Ministry of Education of China. Prof. Hu Daiping was recently elected as the “Chang Jiang Young Scholar.” Various honors were awarded to our faculty for their distinguished research by the State Council, the Ministry of Education, the Government of Jiangsu Province. Most of our faculty members got research funding from the central government. And several of them received the highly prestigious and competitive National Social Sciences Funding for Significant Projects.

Our department is home to many prestigious interdisciplinary research centers and institutes, including the Center for Studies of Marxist Social Theory, the Diane and Guilford Glazer Institute of Jewish Studies, the Center for Studies of Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, and Chinese Traditional Culture, and so on.
Our department has an independent library of 300, 000 books (including the new Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe and Heidegger Gesamtausgabe), 600 Chinese journals, and 50 journals in other languages such as The Philosophical Review, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, and so on.
Our department is committed to promoting global academic exchange. We have established a long term cooperative relationship with more than 10 philosophy departments or research institutes in various countries. Most of our professors and Ph.D. students have spent at least one year as a visiting scholar or student at the philosophy department of an accredited university in a foreign country. Many of our professors were invited to give talks or teach courses in English. We also invite dozens of internationally recognized philosophers or scholars to give talks or short-term lectures at NJU every year.

School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Nanjing University, is a polytechnic institute founded in January 2008 on the basis of the original Department of Earth Sciences. Now, it has three departments, Department of Earth Sciences, Department of Water Sciences and Department of Geological Engineering and Information Technology.
The school has 150 faculty members, including 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 65 professors (including 44 doctoral supervisors), 46 associate professors, 39 lecturers, 5 Distinguished Professors in the Changjiang Scholars Program, 2 academic chair professors, 10 winners of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars and 1 with the title National Outstanding Teacher.
The School of Earth Sciences and Engineering is one of the oldest geology educational programs in China. It has nurtured a large number of outstanding geoscientists and has the largest number of graduates who are now academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the winners of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars among universities within China. The school tradition and characteristics in its history of over 90 years can be summarized as “patriotism and dedication, sincerity and unity, science and democracy, and realism and innovation.”
Each year, the school enrolls about 100 undergraduates, who major in geology, geochemistry, geophysics, hydrology and water resources, and geological engineering. It has two first-level doctoral-degree-conferring disciplines, geology and geological resources and engineering, eight second-level doctoral-degree-conferring disciplines, including the deposit mineralogy petrology, structural geology, geochemistry, paleontology and stratigraphy, hydrology and water resources, mineral prospecting and exploration, earth exploration and information technology, and geological engineering, and nine second-level master-degree-conferring disciplines. Each year, the school enrolls about 90 master’s students and 40 doctoral students. In addition, the school also has a post-doctoral station in geology.
In the key construction disciplines in the National “211” and “985” Projects, the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering has geology as the first-level national key discipline and hydrology and water resources as the national key construction discipline and the provincial key discipline of Jiangsu Province. The school also has the national geology talents training base and the national experimental teaching demonstration center, both approved by the Ministry of Education. In the latest assessment by the Academic Degree Center of the Ministry of Education, the geology discipline of Nanjing University was ranked the first of universities in China; geology and geochemistry were listed as the Best Brand Disciplines of Jiangsu Province (A category) and leading disciplines; hydrology and water resources and geological engineering were awarded the Distinctive Disciplines of Jiangsu Province.
The school has two basic tasks, talent cultivation and scientific research. In talent cultivation, it focuses on cultivating high-quality, broad-based, and creative talents in aspects of virtue, knowledge and capacity. The undergraduate course series includes basic courses, core compulsory courses and cutting-edge elective courses. During the undergraduate years, students participate in two field practice sessions: general geology practice (lakes and hills in Nanjing) and the regional geological surveying practice (Chaohu-based). It lays stress on the integration of teaching and scientific research. Good undergraduates can be admitted to the graduate program without taking the entrance examination and outstanding masters can apply for the master-doctorcontinuous program.
In recent years, the school has published over 20 types of text materials, won 7 national teaching achievement prizes, and 15 provincial/ministerial teaching achievement prizes. In scientific research, it has undertaken about 1,000 national key projects with nearly 100 million yuan of annual research grant. Each year, it publishes about 100 papers in SCI journals.
The School of Earth Sciences and Engineering hosts the State Key Laboratory for Mineral Deposits Research and the Ministry-of-Education Key Laboratory of Supergene Geochemistry. It has a well-equipped experimental analysis system and is able to carry out microcrystalline, constant and trace element analysis, isotope analysis, inclusion research and diagenetic mineralization experiments for all kinds of geological samples. Relying on its faculty, the school has established 14 earth science research institutes. For instance, the InstituteofGeophysicsand Dynamics has 45 sets of internationally advanced broadband seismographs. With the permission of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology, the school publishes the journal College Geology and runs the Museum of Earth Sciences at Nanjing University.
In international cooperation, the school has set up relationships of cooperation and exchange with dozens of universities and research institutions at home and abroad. It has succeeded in holding a series of national and international conferences. It has invites famous scholars at abroad to give lectures and has sent teachers to attend international conferences or carry out cooperative research. To broaden the vision of students, the school sent students for field practice at Lake Baikal and at Mount Tianshan together with students from California Institute of Technology (USA). Graduates from the school can be employed in many areas and are regarded by employers as having good learning, good ability and good potential.

The School of Government at Nanjing University enjoys a history of over 90 years. It originated from the politics department of National Southeast University (1921) and the politics department of University of Nanking (1924).
Nanjing University rebuilt the Department of Politics in 1986, based on which the School of Public Management was founded in 2002, later renamed as the School of Government (2009).
The school currently has four departments including Political Science, Public Administration, Labor & Social Security, and Diplomacy & International Affairs (under construction).
The School of Government offers diverse programs, majors, courses and seminars for both undergraduate and graduate students.
For undergraduates, it has four majors, Political Science, International Relations, Public Administration and Labor & Social Security, among which the Public Administration major is labeled as “national featured major.”
It offers Ph.D. programs in Political Science and Public Management. Both programs recruit postdoctoral researchers, and the Political Science program is authorized as the Key Program of Jiangsu Province.
Three Key Research Centers of Jiangsu Province are also affiliated with the school, in Societal Risks & Public Management Crises, Public Affairs & Local Governance, and Grass-root Organizations, respectively. In total, the school has 46 faculty members, including 20 full professors, 19 associate professors and 7 assistant professors. Forty of the faculty members have doctoral degrees, of whom eight professors have had their Ph.D.s from the USA, France, UK, Germany, Japan, and Russia. The school has one Chang Jiang Distinguished Professor titled by the State Ministry of Education, four professors as CCP Marxism Research Project’s chief experts, three professors as the National Social Science Fund (NSSF) specialists, three professors sitting in the National Education Committee, and four winners of the “New Century Excellent Talents Project” titled by the State Ministry of Education.
The last three decades have witnessed notable progress of the School of Government in teaching, research, and social services, which now is one of the nation’s leading centers for political science and public management. The State Ministry of Education ranked the school’s political science program as No. 8 of the nation (2002) and later No. 5 (2012).
The faculty wins their reputation by actively participating in domestic and international academic communities. Their scholarship spans across subfields of political science and public administration, especially strong in Chinese politics, Western Political Philosophy, Ethics of Public Administration, Public Policy, Social Security, Societal Risks and Public Crisis management. Recently, the faculty have won grants for more than 60 national and provincial projects and programs, five NSSF and CME key programs included. The School of Journalism and Communication was founded as the Film and Broadcasting Special Program at the university (formerly Jinling University) in 1936. It was the first educational institution of film and broadcasting in China.
The founder Mr. Sun Mingjing was a pioneer of China’s media and film education and an early member of the Chinese committee at the UNESCO. The Film and Broadcasting Special Program, the first of its kind, paved the way for the higher education of film and broadcasting in China. The Film and Broadcasting Special Program was restructured and changed its title to a department in October 1992, and the department was subsequently changed into School of Journalism and Communication in December 2003.

The events in the past few years include the Biennial Convention of CSSCI Journals in Journalism and Communication, Doctoral Students Academic Luncheons, Master’s Students Seminars, Book Club Study Session, and Sun Mingjing Media Forum. The school also held China-Europe Media Forum, Journalism and Communication Journal Editors Forum and other events dedicated to promote dialogues and collaboration in research.

In December 2009, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) was founded with faculty members from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, which was originally established in 1993 by Dr. Min Naiben, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Zhu Shining, also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, acted as the interim Dean of CEAS, while conducting a world-wide search for a dean who could lead CEAS towards a world-class college with its research and education focusing on developing cutting-edge technologies and engineering solutions to tackle major societal challenges.
In May 2011, Dr. Nie Shuming, a world-renowned scholar from Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology with broad experience both in USA and China, became the International Dean of CEAS. Selected by Nanjing University as a test bed to pioneer the university’s internationalization initiative, CEAS is taking a systematic approach in its efforts towards building a world-class college. Internationalization is being implemented in every facet of the college (education, research, administration, faculty recruiting/assessment, and infrastructure), and virtually every member of the college (administrators, faculty, staff, students) is participating.
CEAS has assembled an administrative team consisting of both world-renowned scholars from developed countries and China. The current Secretary of the Party Committee is Mr. Zang Wencheng. Prof. Lu Yan-qing, a Changjiang distinguished professor and OSA fellow serves as the executive dean of the college.
CEAS focuses on four cutting-edge engineering disciplines and national strategic priorities, with each focus corresponding to an academic department, namely materials science and engineering, quantum electronics and optical engineering, biomedical engineering, and energy science and engineering. Selected interdisciplinary centers are also being established to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration, translation, and commercialization.
A new tenure-track system is being implemented for faculty recruiting, evaluation and promotion. Over the recent years, nearly 30 junior faculty members have been recruited from the US, UK, Europe, and Japan into the tenure-track system, primarily through the prestigious “National Thousand Global Young Talents” program.
The curriculum of each department of CEAS offers a wide selection of courses taught by world-class faculty scholars. The medium of instruction for many courses (target percentage: 50%-80% in five years) is being converted to English. High quality course work is also combined with extracurricular activities, many of which are international such as an international summer camp of engineering design in collaboration with the Ohio State University.
Faculty members of the CEAS conduct cutting-edge research, and regularly publish in high profile scholarly journals such as Science, Nature, Physical Review Letters, Advanced Materials, JACS, Angewandte Chemie, and Nano Letters.
International research collaborations are beginning to form via joint research projects and international research laboratories. Finally, a new 60,000 m2 world-class building for research and education is currently under construction to house the academic departments and research centers, embodying CEAS’s global vision and forward-looking plan.
CEAS is now striving to become a world-class college in the near future. Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is a scientific discipline integrating fundamental material knowledge, engineering principle and manufacture process to create new materials, microscopic devices and systems for improving human life. The mission of the department is to achieve breakthroughs in material science and engineering for cutting-edge technologies, including informatics, energy storage and converting as well as precision medicine.
Since founded in 1993, the MSE department has distinguished itself through faculty leadership in national research communities and close partnerships with industry and the government. Over the past three years, more than 80 research projects (about 190 million yuan RMB) have been granted from national funding bodies, including 9 from the State Key Program for Basic Research of China, 3 from the National 863 Projects. The faculty has published more than 500 research papers in peer-reviewed journals. It has been granted 40 Chinese patents and 3 international patents with 65 more patents pending.

Currently the MSE department enrolls about 80 BS, 75 MS and 25 Ph.D. students every year.
Established in 2010, the Department of Quantum Electronics and Optical Engineering now has 15 professors, 8 associate professors, 1 lecturer, and 2 senior engineers. This faculty includes 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 member of the “One-thousand Talents Plan,” 3 OSA Fellows, 6 members of the “Youth One-thousand Talents Plan,” and 1 Changjiang Scholar with distinguished professorship.
Research directions of the department cover a wide range of areas, including (but not limited to) quantum information, all-solid-state lasers, optical sensors and communications, micro/nano-photonics, bio-photonics, photovoltaic solar cell, and so on.

Undergraduate program
The undergraduate program, which leads to a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, concentrates on optoelectronic information science and engineering, and it has an innovative curriculum integrating physics, materials, electronics as well as modern optical science and technology courses. The program introduces students to front-line research topics in a modular fashion, allowing for a highly personalized course schedule that fits students’ individual interests.
Graduate program
The postgraduate programs in optical engineering include a Master in Engineering program and a Doctor of Philosophy program. The graduate students are trained in a leading research infrastructure, supervised by top engineers and scientists.
Biomedical Engineering (BME) integrates engineering principles and biomedical knowledge to solve biomedical problems and develop innovative technologies for diseases diagnosis, treatment and prevention, thus improving the quality of human life.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering was established in October 2011. Over the last 5 years, it has grown rapidly, both in the number of people and the amount of research funding. It has made significant progress in undergraduate/graduate education, fundamental research, as well as clinical translation.

The BME undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor’s in Engineering has a curriculum integrating mathematics, physics, chemistry as well as life science and basic medicine courses. The program introduces students to advanced research in a modular fashion for a training that is personalized to individual students.
Graduate program
Students in the BME graduate program are supervised by leading engineers and scientists in the fields. This three-year program leads to a Master in Engineering Degree.
The department of Energy Science and Engineering (DESE), established in July2012, is aimed at developing multidisciplinary research on scientific and engineering applications in new energy development. At present, there are several research fields in DESE:

DESE combines several disciplines that are traditionally strong in Nanjing University, including materials and microelectronics, physics, and chemistry. The department strives to become a priority discipline at the university, one of the most important bases for talents training and R&D in the field of energy, generalizing especially advanced secondary battery technology and new energy in China and promoting China’s advances in these fields internationally.

Physics at Nanjing University arises from the Division of Physics and Chemistry, which was founded in 1915 when the university was known as Nanking Higher Normal School. It was later renamed the Department of Physics in 1920 and was one of the earliest physics departments in China.
With the development of physical science at Nanjing University, the Department of Information Physics and the Department of Material Science and Engineering were separated from the Department of Physics in 1984 and 1994, respectively. Based on these three departments, the School of Physics, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the School of Electronic Science and Engineering were founded in 2009.
Over the past hundred years, the School of Physics at Nanjing University has contributed significantly to the scientific developments and the modernization of the country, and has itself become one of the best physics departments in China. The university’s Physics was ranked number one in China in 2007 and 2012 by the Academic & Graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education of China.

Centennial celebration of Physics at Nanjing University
Currently, the school has 215 faculty members and supporting staff, including 94 professors and 49 associate professors. Among the faculty members, there are ten academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two 1000-Talents Program Scholars, 17 Changjiang Professors of the Ministry of Education of China, 22 winners of the National Outstanding Young Investigator Prize awarded by the National Nature Science Foundation of China, eight 1000 Young Talents Program Scholars, nine chief scientists of the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), four APS Fellows, and two OSA Fellows.
The School of Physics now has four departments and one teaching center. They are the Department of Modern Physics; the Department of Physics; the Department of Photonics and Quantum Optics; the Department of Acoustic Science and Engineering; and the Center of Physical Teaching & Experiments.
The school offers Bachelor of Science degrees in physics, applied physics and acoustics, and advanced programs leading to Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in theoretical physics; condensed matter physics; acoustics; optics, atomic and molecular physics; computation physics; particle physics and nuclear physics; and biophysics and soft matter.
It provides more than 80 core and optional courses, more than 100 physics experiments and dozens of research training programs. The school has a tradition of excellent teaching in both undergraduate and graduate courses. It is the National Training Base of the Basic Science of Physics, its experimental center is the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and is now supported by the National Physics Undergraduate Top-Notch Training Plan. The school has won three first class National Teaching Achievement Awards in Higher Education.
Now, the school has over 800 undergraduate students and 700 graduate students (of whom more than half are Ph.D. candidates). More than 70% of graduates pursue both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. degree. In recent years, a dozen graduates have entered world famous universities to continue their studies, and nine Ph.D. graduates have had their dissertations win the title of the “National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation.”
Physics at the university includes a wide variety of disciplines and specializations, ranging from practical, technology-driven fields to the study of fundamental physics and the structure of the universe. The major fields of study include condensed matter; atomic, molecular, and optical physics; acoustics and its applications; and nuclear, particle and high energy physics (cosmology). There are also some fields that cross into other disciplines, such as computational physics, biophysics and soft matter.
Since 2002, the School of Physics has won one National First Award for Natural Science and eight National Second Awards for Natural Science. The school has received research funding of over 100 million yuan RMB per year for the past five years, and is well-represented in international journals (SCI).
Every year it has over 450 publications, and among them more than ten research papers have been published in internationally renowned professional journals, including Phys. Rev. Lett, and Nature’s subsidiary periodicals such as Nature Physics, Nature Materials, and Nature Photonics.
The National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures (NLSSM) was founded in 1984 and was one of the first state key laboratories founded in China. As a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, the goals of NLSSM are to design and fabricate new artificial microstructured materials by designing and tailoring the energy band structures in reciprocal space, to discover new macroscopic and microscopic quantum effects and principles, to develop new theories and methodologies based on quantum physics, and to endeavor to meet the scientific challenges and technological requirements encountered in the post-Moore era and the post-petroleum era. In all of the assessments for state key laboratories, NLSSM always received an “excellent laboratory” assessment. The journal Nature assessed that NLSSM was one of the institutes in the Pacific Rim of Asia, excluding Japan, that approached world-class standards in research in 1997 [Nature 389, 113 (1997)]. The laboratory sincerely welcomes international cooperation in areas of material design, quantum physics, nanooptics and plasmonics, clean energy and environment-related studies.
In 2014, the School of Physics took the lead in founding the Collaborative Innovation Center of Advanced Microstructures (CICAM), which was initially established under the 2011 plan by the Ministry of Education of China. This is a project in partnership with the physics departments at Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, the University of Science and Technology of China, and the Hefei Institute of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Science.

The history of the School of Liberal Arts of Nanjing University dates back to Sanjiang Normal School and Nanking University (Huiwen Shuyuan), founded in 1902 and 1888 respectively. It first became a department of Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1914. Then for different periods, it successively belonged to National Southeast University, No. 4 Zhongshan University, Jiangsu University, National Central University and Nanjing University. As Nanking University, which evolved from Christian colleges, merged with Nanjing University in 1952, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature was set up. It was renamed School of Liberal Arts in 2007.
Over the past 100 years, many renowned scholars and educators have taught at the school, including Li Ruiqing, Wang Xie, Huang Kan, Wang Dong, Wu Mei, Hu Xiaoshi, Chen Zhongfan, Wang Pijiang, Fang Guangtao, Luo Genze, Chen Baichen, Chen Shouzhu and Cheng Qianfan. Through the diligent and persistent work of generations of faculty and students, the school has fostered an academic tradition of simplicity, integrity and creativity in the spirit of seeking truth rather than following fashion fostering. In this spirit, the School has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents for China.
Since the 1980s, the school has developed rapidly, enjoying a good reputation at home and abroad. It hosts various programs in two disciplinary fields – Chinese language and literature, and Drama and Film Studies. Its program of Chinese language and literature is among the first national key disciplines and the first national personnel training and research bases for Chinese language and literature. It also has a first-level doctoral program and a post-doctoral station. It has rich resources for academic research. The school library has a collection of more than 400,000 books and various specialized collections. In addition, the school is home to several research centers, including the Research Center for Modern Chinese Literature, a key humanities research base funded by the Ministry of Education; the China Center for Linguistics and Strategic Studies funded by the Ministry of Education; and the Research Institute for Classical Literature, affiliated to the National Commission for Classics Editing and Research by Institutions of Higher Learning.
In the 21st century, faculty and students of the school are carrying on its excellent academic tradition, striving to make progress in their teaching and research and make more contributions to social progress and cultural innovation.

The School of Liberal Arts currently comprises six departments, Departments of Literature, Linguistics, Documentics, Theater and Film Studies, as well as Departments of College Chinese and Overseas Education. Among the eight secondary disciplines under the discipline of Chinese language and literature, the School has seven, including ancient Chinese literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Chinese language and philology, classical Chinese documentics, literary theory, comparative literature and world literature, and linguistics and applied linguistics. The school also hosts the program of Drama and Film Studies in the disciplinary field of arts. The School now runs 13 doctoral programs, 13 MA programs, two professional MA programs (MFA and MTCSOL), and two undergraduate programs. Covering a wide range of subjects, the School boasts an excellent doctoral program of Chinese language and literature, ranking among the top of its kind in China.
In 2006, the school had three disciplines highly evaluated in the national appraisal and became “national key disciplines”; they were Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, and Chinese Language and Philology. In 2007, another discipline, Literary Theory, was granted the title of national key discipline. In the same year, with four national key disciplines, the school ranked the second among China’s Chinese departments and was approved by the Ministry of Education as a first-level national key discipline, the very first among liberal arts and social sciences disciplines in Nanjing University.
The School of Liberal Arts has three national-level and five university-level research centers. Among them, the Research Center for Modern Chinese Literature is one of the 100 research bases for philosophy and social sciences approved by the Ministry of Education. The China Center for Linguistics and Strategic Studies is one co-funded by Nanjing University and the Department of Language Information Management of the Ministry of Education. The Research Institute for Classical Literature is affiliated to the National Commission for Classics Editing and Research by Institutions of Higher Learning. The Research Center for Chinese Poetics, the Research Institute for Aesthetics, the Research Institute for Overseas Chinese Books, the Sociolinguistics Laboratory, the Research Institute of Dialects and Culture, the Center in Asian Film Television and Media Studies，and the Research Institute of History of Chinese Language are university-level research centers for the humanities and social sciences. In addition, the school has established a number of research institutions for basic research or new studies, including, the Research Institute for Theater and Film Studies, the Compilation and Research Office for The Complete Collection of Qing Poetry, the Compilation and Research Office for the Poetry of Tang and Five Dynasties, the Research Institute for Comparative Literature and Comparative Cultural Studies, the Research Institute for Kunqv Opera, the Research Institute for Literature by Taiwan, Hong Kong and Overseas Chinese Writers, the Research Institute for Jianghuai Dialect, and the Digital Art Laboratory. These institutions strive to improve research standards and promote the development of new studies.
The School of Liberal Arts has a faculty of 75 outstanding teachers. Among them, there are 44 professors, 25 associate professors and 6 lecturers, accounting for 58.7%, 33.3% and 8% of all respectively. Among them, 68 hold doctoral degrees, taking up 90.7% of the total.
The faculty members of the school are highly acclaimed for their achievements. Among them, two members are on the Disciplinary Appraisal Panels under the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 12 with special government allowances awarded by the State Council, four specially recruited professors on the Changjiang Award Program for Prominent Scholars, two selected candidates of the National Program for the Cultivation of Tens of Millions of Talents in the New Century. Two faculty members have obtained sponsorship from the Program for Talented People of the Century, nine are involved in the New-Century Program for Supporting Excellent Talents, and three in the Program for Sponsoring Young Teachers, and one appointed National Young Experts with Outstanding Contributions, all funded by the Ministry of Education. At the provincial level, two middle-aged and young experts are recognized as having made outstanding contributions, twelve have been selected into the Jiangsu 333 Project and nine into the Jiangsu Qinglan Project, one is granted the title of Distinguished Teacher, and one of Excellent Educator. With the addition of an excellent national teaching team, faculty members that enjoy the above titles and grants account for over 50% of the total. During all teaching evaluation surveys organized by the university, more than 95% of the faculty members scored above 4 on a 5-point scale, among whom several have been acknowledged by the undergraduates as “our favorite teachers.”
In 1992, the School of Liberal Arts was accredited by the Ministry of Education as one of the first reform bases for liberal arts education, and later on it became the only qualified experimental unit in the discipline of Chinese language and literature.
In 1995, the school was authorized as one of the first personnel training and research bases of Chinese language and literature in China, awarded as an excellent base in 1998 during the mid-term review, and officially approved after passing the appraisal by the Ministry of Education in 2001.
In 2003, the Chinese Language and Literature major was granted a provincial-level quality major by the Jiangsu Education Commission.
In 2008, it was awarded a national distinctive major construction unit and a national experimental zone for the education of innovative talents.
The school runs two undergraduate programs in Chinese Language and Literature and in Theater and Film Studies. Its MA and doctoral programs cover the whole discipline of Chinese Language and Literature as well as the discipline of Theater and Film Studies.
To help the students foster their innovative abilities on the basis of a solid foundation, the school has a multi-dimensional and research-oriented undergraduate curriculum, incorporating condensed core courses and specialized elective courses.
The undergraduate education in the School of Liberal Arts focuses on the training of qualified students and the development of research bases. At the same time, it keeps promoting its reforms, maintaining its advantages and improving its teaching. For many years, the school has been enjoying the renowned title of Excellent Teaching Unit awarded by Nanjing University.
In the year of 2001, two research projects conducted by the school, “A Study on the Training of Talents for the 21st Century and Education Model for Research Bases” and “A Study on the Talents Training Bases and Model for Chinese Language and Literature Department,” funded respectively by the Ministry of Education and the Jiangsu Education Commission, were awarded the first prize of the State-Level Teaching Award and the grand prize of the Jiangsu Province Teaching Award.
The project “The Construction of Research-Oriented Curriculum for Chinese Majors” received the grand prize of the Higher Education Teaching Award from Jiangsu provincial government in 2007 and the second prize of the State-Level Teaching Award in 2008.
The Project “Training the First an Second-Year Chinese Majors for Innovation in a Research University” received the grand prize of the Higher Education Teaching Award from Jiangsu Provincial Government in 2013 and the second prize of the State-Level Teaching Award in 2014.
The School of Liberal Arts enjoys high standing in China for its student enrollment and teaching quality. Current enrollment reaches over 700 students in MA and Ph.D. programs, including 190 international students. Many MA and Ph.D. graduates find positions in high-level professional fields, among whom 40 are now doctoral supervisors in various renowned universities and colleges. One Ph.D. dissertation has been awarded the Award of National Excellent Doctorial Dissertation while two have been nominated for the same award.
In recent years, the School of Liberal Arts has being promoting exchange programs for its graduates and undergraduates. It has established a long-term exchange program with Hong Kong Baptist University and various other colleges. In 2007 and 2008, the school encouraged its Ph.D. candidates to apply to the exchange programs sponsored by the Ministry of Education. With the school’s international influence, 25 of its doctoral candidates were granted permission by the Ministry of Education and subsequently entered universities abroad. The school thus started its exchange programs with Brown University, Columbia University, Duke University, the University of California, San Diego, University of Wisconsin, University of Washington, Kyoto University, Nara Women's University, University of London, Edinburgh University and other prestigious universities overseas in their joint efforts of training of high-level talents.
Overseas MA programs run by the School of Liberal Arts are steadily growing. Over the last 10 years, the school has had MA programs in Singapore and Malaysia, where overseas Chinese students have been able to attend MA programs in Chinese Language and Literature offered by the school. Meanwhile, it has set up joint programs with the School of Chinese, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and the Chinese Department of Dongguk University. Scholarships are provided for foreign students in China. The number of foreign students applying for B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees increases every year, and this helps with the internationalization of its students.
The Department of Chinese Language and Literature in the School of Liberal Arts is a First Level National Key Discipline. The establishment of national, university and school level research centers and institutes greatly promotes the academic research of the school. The school aims at a steady development on the basis of maintaining its strengths in its teaching and research. The school will focus on the development of Cultural Studies, Marxist Aesthetics, Aesthetic Anthropology, Studies on Modern and Contemporary Academic and Literary History, Studies on the Overseas Chinese Books, Studies on the Overseas Sinology, Studies on Ci Poetry and Fu Prose, Studies on Qing Dynasty Literature, Chinese Historical Documentics, Overseas Chinese Literature, Intercultural Studies, Comparative Literary Theory, Language Planning Studies, Sociolinguistics, Dialectology, Lexicography, and Ancient Philology.
The new millennium has witnessed the school’s great achievements in research. It has successfully passed the evaluation for Project 211 (stages I and II) and Project 985 (stage I).
In 2004, the School became the host to National 985 Project Chinese Language and Culture and National Identity, a Base for Innovative Research in Philosophy and Social Sciences.
Now the School has successfully passed the evaluation for Project 985 (stage III).
In 2014, the Center for Collaborative Innovation of Chinese Literature and East Asian civilization was certified as a Jiangsu Provincial University Center for Collaborative Innovation.
After 2000, the average annual publication from the school’s faculty in AH&I and CSSCI journals amounts to 150. Over 50 monographs have been published. Over 100 major awards were received from Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Education, among which 13 were the first prizes of Jiangsu Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Award, and 4 were the first prizes of Jiangsu University Humanities and Social Sciences Research Award.
In 2007, Ce Fu Yuan Gui, a grand-scale compilation of Chinese classics, was awarded the Official Prize of the 1st Chinese Government Publication Award.
Since 2000, the School of Liberal Arts has obtained 60 standard projects, 5 Major Projects, and 1 Key Project funded by the National Philosophy and Social Sciences Foundation, 9 projects funded by the National Artistic and Scientific Foundation, 4 projects funded by the National Language Association, 4 key projects funded by the Ministry of Education, 1 key project funded by the University Science and Technology Innovation Foundation, 15 key projects funded by the Ministry of Education for Humanities and Social Sciences Research Bases, 2 projects funded by the Ministry of Education New Millennium Talents Foundation, 5 projects funded by the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences Research Ph.D. Programs Foundation, 16 projects funded by the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation, 9 project funded by the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences Research Youth Foundation, 3 project post-funded by the Ministry of Education, and 26 standard projects and 4 Major Projects funded by Jiangsu Philosophy and Social Sciences Foundation. In addition, there are also cultural projects with nation-wide influences: the proofreading and editing of The New Tang Book, which is part of the proofreading and editing project of 24 Histories, and the compilation of San Wen History, which is part of the compilation work of The Qing History. These research projects, especially the key projects, have brought the school more research funding and made it academically well-known both nationally and internationally.
The School of Liberal Arts actively organizes international exchange programs. Its faculty members participate in various kinds of international projects, conferences, and visiting programs. The school also hosts many academic programs. At present, it is in academic cooperation with prestigious institutions such as the Harvard-Yenching Institute, Brown University,Duke University, University of London, Edinburgh University, Leiden University (Holland), University of Mannheim (Germany), Kyoto University (Japan), Korean University of Foreign Studies, and National Taiwan University, Tsinghua University (Taiwan), National Central University (Taiwan), Tunghai University (Taiwan), Hong Kong University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Baptist University.
The program of Ancient Chinese Literature has a tradition of organizing international conferences since 1990s, providing a platform for scholars at home and abroad to discuss ancient Chinese literature.
In 2006, the school hosted the First Humanities and Social Sciences Forum for Scholars from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, which was a collaborative effort of Nanjing University, National Central University (Taiwan), and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The Sociolinguistic Lab annually holds a language seminar, which is well known in international sociolinguistic circles.
The Institute of Overseas Chinese Books Studies, with its long-term research in the field, organized an international symposium in the year 2007, playing a leading role in the studies of Chinese books in East Asia.
During the past 5 years, the school organized altogether 18 international conferences, gaining good reputation in the academic circle.
The School of Liberal Arts publishes 21 academic anthologies and journals, among which Journal of Literary Criticism Supplement, Classical Literature, Intercultural Communication，and Yangzijinag Review are indexed by CSSCI.
The School of Liberal Arts has four goals for its teaching, research, and curriculum development.
The first goal is to foster in students a solid foundation, practical skills, professional expertise, and a broad horizon. The school will maintain a research-oriented teaching methodology, construct better liberal arts labs, provide students with more social practice opportunities, and cultivate more qualified talents for educational institutions, research institutes and management positions. As a top-ranking Chinese language and literature discipline in China, it will also expand its enrollment of international students and provide qualified Chinese language and literature majors internationally.
The second goal is to make full use of the present resources and specialty, and to attract and employ qualified new faculty members. The four National Key Disciplines—the Program of Ancient Chinese Literature, the Program of Modern Chinese Literature, the Program of Chinese Language and Philology, and the Program of Literary Theory—will lead other programs toward an overall development. The school will strive to maintain its leading position nationally and try to develop several programs to an internationally advanced level.
The third goal is to make full use of the advantages of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature to foster the development of inter-disciplinary studies in joint efforts with the Department of Theater and Film Studies and other art disciplines. The school aims at building new National Key Disciplines and common prosperity among all departments.
The fourth goal is to combine teaching with research and to promote cooperation and innovation among disciplines. With their quality research, the Center for Chinese Modern Literature, the China Center for Linguistics and Strategic Studies, and the Research Institute for Classical Literature will contribute to the school’s curriculum development. More research institutes in the School will strive to become national research centers.

The Department of Mathematics at Nanjing University originated from the mathematics department at the National Central University and the mathematics department at Jingling University. The mathematics department at Central University can be further traced back to the mathematics department at Nanjing Higher Normal School founded in 1920 by Professor Xiong Qinglai.
In 1952, the department was formally established under the name of the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy, Nanjing University, through the readjustment of universities and colleges in China.
In 1958, the astronomy faculty was separated from the department and set up the new department of astronomy, while the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy changed its name to the Department of Mathematics.
In 1978, the faculty of computer technology was also separated from the department and established the new department of computer sciences. Since then, the structure of the Department of Mathematics has remained the same.
The department has been well-known for its long history, its strength, and its rigorous scholarship. Since its establishment, many outstanding mathematicians have worked here. It has always had a leading status at home and has been well-known abroad for its academic influences, especially in the areas of dynamic system, differential equations, number theory and K theory, and scientific and engineering computing.
The department currently has three undergraduate specialties, namely, the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (a Characteristic Specialty Construction Point of the State Ministry of Education), Information and Computing Sciences, and Statistics.
At present, the department is a national training base for basic science research and teaching talents and is a Jiangsu advantaged subject with two grade-one subjects (mathematics is the national grade-one key subject and statistics is the Jiangsu grade-one key subject), and has ascended into the highest 1% in the ranking of ESI global subjects for its mathematics.
The Department of Mathematics has a strong academic faculty of 76 members, including 34 full professors, 31 associate professors, 26 doctoral supervisors, 2 persons elected into the “1,000-Talent Program,” 3 Cheung Kong professors, 7 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 winner of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 2 persons elected into the National Talent Program, 2 winners of the Fund for Rewarding Young Teachers of the Ministry of Education, 8 (Cross-Century) New-Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education, and 1 Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education.
Altogether, 96.8% of the basic and specialized courses are taught by professors and associate professors.
The faculty members have obtained more than 30 various awards in recent years, including the high-grade awards such as the second prize of the National Natural Science, Chenxing Prize in Mathematics, Qiushi Outstanding Youth Scholars Award, first prize of Natural Sciences of Universities and Colleges of China, and first prize of Scientific and Technological Advancement of Jiangsu Province.
More than two thirds of the faculty members are leaders of national-level scientific research projects, and at present, they take charge of nearly 70 on-going national key projects including 973 Program as well as outstanding, key and general programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, equivalent to one project per person, ranking among the top mathematics departments in universities and colleges in China.
The faculty members devote themselves to teaching, original research and making high-quality achievements. In recent years, they have published large quantities of important papers in influential international journals on mathematics. Especially, in 2011 and 2012, they published three papers in internationally top-ranking mathematics journal Inventiones Mathematicae. The research of the faculty has produced significant influence in the international mathematical society. For example, Professor Cheng Chongqing was the invited speaker at the 2010 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2010).
The department has established highly efficient mechanisms for academic exchange and international cooperation and has strengthened talent training and academic exchange by means of “inviting in and dispatching out.” Every year, it invites nearly 100 preeminent scholars from at home and abroad (including winners of Fields Medal, lifetime professors of world top-ranking universities, and academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences) to visit and give lectures at this department, and dispatches dozens of excellent undergraduate students as exchange students to study at partner schools overseas.
The department uses diversified methods of talent training. It recruits new undergraduate students by the general category of mathematics and does not stipulate their specialty in the first two years, but strengthens the basic training for them. In the third and fourth years, it divides them into different specialties according to the different types and characteristics of different students. In recent years, the department has vigorously carried out the reform of the graduate programs and changed the recruitment of doctoral students from the unified examination to an independently implemented “application-assessment” system.
The department has won 1 first prize of Jiangsu Award for Teaching Achievements and 1 second prize of Jiangsu Award for Excellent Teaching Achievements. It has been titled the Excellent Teaching Team of Universities and Colleges of Jiangsu once and has 1 course titled the National High-Quality Course. It has compiled 5 “oriented at the 21st century” teaching materials, 2 teaching materials under the 11th Five-Year National Planning for Common Higher Education, 1 key teaching material for higher education schools of Jiangsu Province during the 12th Five-Year Plan period, and it has compiled a total of more than 40 teaching materials.
At each session of China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), the department makes outstanding achievements.
The department has many doctoral dissertations that won the title of Provincial Excellent Doctoral Disseretations of the Province, and 1 of them won the title as one of the 100 Doctoral Disseretations of the Country.
Over the years, around 30% of the master’s degree candidates from the department have been admitted to the doctoral program in advance, around 10% of them have been admitted to doctoral programs in other universities at home and abroad, and around 60% of them have earned their degree and obtained employment with satisfaction. The department has obtained many achievements in the talent training, and one of the benchmarks is the 100% employments rate of its graduates. These graduates have been making important contributions to China’s economic and cultural development in almost all academic, business, and industrial fields.
These graduates have found favor with employers for their solid professional foundation, good observation ability, abstract thinking ability and creative and development potentials. Meanwhile, more than 70% of the graduates continue their study at the world’s top-ranking universities abroad such as Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Columbia, Cambridge, as well as well-known universities within China.
The team of Hamiltonian Dynamics is internationally well-recognized. In recent years, some breakthrough progress has been made by faculty members towards the solution of some notable problems such as Arnold diffusion which, because of its importance, was intensively studied by many top-level mathematicians. The faculty shall continue its efforts to develop the team of dynamical system, not only for Hamiltonian dynamics, but also for differentiable and complex dynamics, so that it will become one of the international centers for dynamical systems.
A central subject of number theory is the study of L-functions of number fields. The famous Riemann Hypothesis is about the distribution of non-trivial zeros of the zeta-functions. The values at the integers of an L-function of a number field contain information of many arithmetic invariants of the field, some of which are closely related to the K-groups of the ring of algebraic integers of the field. Hence there exists deep connection between algebraic number theory and K-theory. In recent years, K-theory has also played an essential role in the proof of the BSD conjecture for function fields.
The faculty will continue its in-depth research in related topics, including representations of quadratic forms, elliptic curves, arithmetic algebraic geometry, dynamical system, Euler system, Mahler measure, and structures of various K-groups. It will focus on the mainstream of the international mathematical developments and major problems, such as the Lang-Trotter conjecture, the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture of quasi-projective varieties, the Beilinson conjecture, the Coleman-Oort conjecture, and the relation between the algebraic K-groups of an elliptic curve over a number field and the values at the integers of the L-function of the curve.
The research at the department has been focusing on the following (but not limited to) areas and some progress has been made.
The phenomena of transonic flows and transonic shocks in fluid dynamics;
Theory of mixed type partial differential equations and degenerate elliptic equations;
Efficient numerical methods for scattering problems with high wave numbers and theirs theoretical analysis, which has been an open problem for several decades;
The combined multi-scale finite element methods (MFEM) for multi-scale problems, which raise the simulation efficiency for some multi-scale problems such as underground water;
Stability, error, and super-convergence analysis for the local discontinuous Galerkin methods with various time discretizations, which has important applications in the fields of computational fluid dynamics; and
The inverse problems of anomalous diffusion equations of fractional order, which has important applications in the fields of material mechanics, biochemistry, medicine, and image processing.
The main research directions of the theory and application of modern statistical analysis include the statistical analysis of time series models and related fields, the research on stochastic mathematics [statistics for stochastic processes, stochastic process and network, stochastic analysis and stochastic (ordinary/partial) differential equations, optimization on stochastic process and stochastic optimal control] and its cross applications in information science and financial management, spatial statistical analysis, the statistical analysis of Bayesian econometric models, and small value probability of branching processes.
Some research achievements have been published in international top-ranking journals and have produced great significances and influences in the international arena. Such research has important theoretical and application values in the fields of biology, computer science, medicine and health, hydrogeology, environmental science, ecology, forestry science, telecommunications, economy, finance, electronic commerce, and physics and control science.
Along with the development of economy and science and technology, high-dimensional big data have emerged gradually in these fields, their statistical analysis has attracted increasingly close attention, and the research prospect is very broad. Related research achievements may be applied to the analysis of socio-economic data, such as futures, foreign exchange rate, stock market returns, the unemployment rate, electronic commerce, forestry resources, remote sensing monitoring, and earthquake center distribution. By establishing reasonable statistical models, the faculty may adjust the distribution of fishery resources, control the spreading scope of infectious diseases, predict or control the risk and development of financial markets.
Mathematical programming is a branch of operational research, and its research object is the arrangement and dispatching of related work in plan management, namely, searching for an optimal scheme according to certain measuring index under some given conditions. Mathematically, it can be expressed as calculating the maximum or minimum value of a real-valued function under certain constraints. It mainly concerns the mathematical nature, solution methods and computer execution of these problems. Mathematical programming includes many branches such as linear programming, nonlinear programming, multi-objective programming, dynamic programming, parametric programming, integer programming, stochastic programming, and variational inequality and complementarity problem. It has important applications in industry, commerce, agriculture, traffic and transportation, and governmental. It is a powerful instrument in the fields of economic programming, system engineering, and modern management.
The main research direction of mathematical logic is recursion theory (also called as computability theory), set theory and their crossing fields. In terms of recursion theory, the faculty focuses on the global structure research on the degree of unsolvability and its application to theoretical computer science. In terms of degree theory, it mainly focuses on model theory properties of the degree of unsolvability. In terms of applications, it focuses on the research on the recursion theory to the algorithmic randomness theory. In terms of set theory, it focuses on effective descriptive set theory and inner model, as well as the research of applications of recursion theory method to set theory.
Over the past 50 years, explosive development has been achieved in recursion theory, and it is embodied not only at the constant expansion of intrinsic contents, but also at the plentiful applications in other fields. The global structure of degree theory has become clear gradually. The automorphism problem is still pending, but elementary substructure problem has been solved basically, and the faculty has made important contributions to the tackling of this problem. In terms of the algorithmic randomness theory, the faculty has realized the most successful application of recursion theory to theoretical computer, and the problem of lowness for randomness has nearly been solved thoroughly.
Now, the faculty is gradually turning to the applications to analysis and dynamic system, especially the ergodic theory in the algorithmic theory. In terms of set theory, it has formed a relatively characteristic research field, which is mainly about the research of recursion theory and algorithmic randomness by applying forcing method and constructibility. For example, higher randomness, chains and antichains are all the new research fields it has gradually found out, and it has attracted the following of many international young prominent scholars.
Geometry and Topology are two important branches which are mutually independent and closely related in modern mathematics, and they take differential manifolds and topological invariants as research objects. Many problems in geometry and topology attract generations of mathematicians. For example, the famous problems include Poincare conjecture and Borel conjecture. Over the past half a century, much great progress has been made in research on modern geometry and topology, and the progress has aroused research on plentiful new important theoretical problems.
The faculty plans to enrich the academic force of each branch of geometry and topology through many years of efforts, combine analysis, geometry and topology, and solve important problems in inter-disciplines, and we plan to conduct research on curvature and topology, global Riemannian geometry, complex geometry, symplectic geometry, toric topology, topological group and general topology theory.
Along with the rise and vigorous development of discrete mathematics, the cross agglomeration of combinatorics with algebra and number theory has given a strong impetus to the settlement of some significant mathematical problems. The famous Szemeredi Theorem and Green-Tao Theorem are just the outcomes of the cross penetration of combinatorics, number theory and analysis. The latest significant breakthrough on the Twin Prime Conjecture by Zhang Yitang, Maynard and Tao are also benefited from the glossy combination of number-theoretic tools and combinatorial arguments, and combinatorics also plays a key role in the important progress made by Tao, et al. recently on the problems concerning big gaps between successive prime numbers. Algebraic combinatorics and additive combinatorics is a popular modern branch in combinatorics, and it involves researching combinatorial properties of algebraic structures as well as combinatorial problems with algebraic tools. The important topics in this field include the combinatorial properties of primes, Ramsey-type problems, cyclic permutations, restricted sum sets over fields, and zero-sum problems in abelian groups. Our work in this aspect has been quoted by some famous mathematicians like Tao and Alon. On the basis of the existing work, the faculty plans to further study the related front-edge problems with advanced tools from number theory, combination, algebra, analysis, probability, and ergodic and strive to obtain influential significant results.

The School of Life Sciences (SLiS) was established in 1990. However, it was one of the oldest life science research and teaching institutions in China because it was evolved from the agriculture science (founded in 1914) in Jinling University and the biology department (founded in 1920) of Nanjing Advanced Normal College.
Over the past 100 years, SLiS has earned national and international recognition and reputation. It carries the spirit of seeking truth from facts, persues constant striving for educational and academic excellence, and has cultivated a great number of talents in biological sciences, including 38 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 13 Outstanding Young Talents from the National Science Foundation for China.
Biology at Nanjing University is one of the seven key national biology programs in China, and Pharmacy and Ecology are the national first-level disciplines. These three disciplines have entered top 1% in ESI international rankings.
SLiS awards doctoral degrees in biology, ecology and pharmacology, and master’s degrees in 9 sub-categary majors, and has established post-doctoral mobile stations in biology, pharmacy and ecology.
SLiS has the State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and National Genetic Engineering Mouse Resources and Engineering Centers for various research institutes. It also has a National Base for Cultivation of Scientific Talents and a National Base of Life Science and Technology Education.

It has won a Jiangsu provincial teaching achievement award and several awards for the compilation of teaching materials. In scientific research, its faculty has published many important original papers in world-renowned journals such as Nature, Science, Cell, and PNAS. Since 2000, SliS has been authorized to have 226 patents, including 4 international ones, and won 8 National Science and Technology Awards, 21 outstanding achievement awards for scientific research in colleges and universities and 6 Jiangsu Science and Technology Awards.
Over the last five years, SLiS’ undergraduate students have participated in research and published 266 papers including 188 SCI papers. Of these papers, 21, including 13 SCI papers, had the undergraduate students as the first author or co-author. They have also joined in applying 58 patents and compiling 3 chapters of monographs.
In the recent three years, SLiS students actively took part in IGEM contest and various national innovation projects and won many impressive results.
SLiS strongly encourages students to participate in domestic and international academic conferences and exchange activities. The predecessor of the Medical School of Nanjing University was the medical school of National Central University, which was founded in 1935, and the university was given its current name in 1949. The school was assimilated into the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in 1951 and re-established in 1987 at the approval of the State Ministry of Education as the first medical school of a comprehensive university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. The mission of the school is to train outstanding healthcare professionals and leading medical scientists.
Since its re-establishment, the medical school has been upholding the tradition and philosophy of time-honored Nanjing University. Based upon a solid foundation of science and rich heritage of culture, the school emphasizes the cultivation of scientific and humanistic spirits in medical students. It hosts three affiliated hospitals (Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Jinling Hospital and Nanjing Stomatological Hospital) and three teaching hospitals (Nanjing Children's Hospital, Nanjing Brain Hospital and the Second Hospital of Nanjing). The three teaching hospitals provide clinical training bases for medical students from Nanjing University, with an emphasis on the training in clinical concepts and clinical skills.
The school ran the pilot eight-year dual degree program for MD/Ph.D. after being selected in 2012 by the Ministry of Education into the Program of Educating and Training Excellent Doctors, a program for the training of outstanding and innovative health care professionals. In 2015, the school initiated another eight-year (5+3) program for the training of medical students which integrates undergraduate and graduate studies.
The school offers two majors for medical students: Clinical Medicine (which consists of an 8-year doctorate program directly after undergraduate study and a 5+3-year master degree program directly after undergraduate study) and Stomatology Medicine (5+3-year master degree program directly after undergraduate study). The school has two first-level-discipline doctoral programs, Clinical Medicine and Basic Medical Sciences, and one first-level-discipline master’s program, Stomatology Medicine. It has post-doctoral research stations in Clinical Medicine and Basic Medical Sciences. Of the basic medical sciences, General Surgery is a national key discipline, Clinical Medicine is a provincial key discipline, and Nursing Care is a professional master’s program
The school’s clinical medical science has been rated among the top 1% in the world by the ESI database of American Institute of Science and Technology Information, thus becoming one of the eleven disciplines at Nanjing University rated among the top 1% worldwide. The school boasts a strong faculty, with 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 86 doctoral supervisors, 130 professors and 176 associate professors. Over the recent three years, the medical school won 4 second prizes of the Ministry-of-Education University Science and Technology Progress Award. It has been holding 9 National Grand Research Projects and 324 National Natural Science Fund Projects, with a total research grants of 152 million yuan.

The School of Foreign Studies (SFS), Nanjing University, traces its history back to a three-year English program initiated in June 1917 which became a four-year program when the Department of English was established in 1920.
Building on its academic heritage, SFS has now developed into an institution of seven departments: English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and Korean, with a total enrollment of over 1,200 students in BA, MA, and Ph.D. programs designed for sustained learning and interdisciplinary opportunities.
It is devoted to excellence in teaching and research, and to nurturing future leaders who are able to make a difference around the world. Center for the Study of Contemporary Foreign Literature and Culture: established in 2009, commissioned and co-funded by Jiangsu Provincial Education Department and Nanjng University.
Institute of Foreign Literature:set up in 1964 as a research center for European and American Culture and commissioned by the Ministry of Education to expand into this foreign literature institute in May 1980, one of the country’s three earliest foreign literature and culture research institutes. The institute publishes a worldly renowned literary quarterly Contemporary Foreign Literature indexed in CSSCI.
Institute of Foreign Linguistics: set up in 2008 with a focus on research in such fields as syntax, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, semiotics, second language acquisition, and foreign language teaching.
Institute of Studies in Spoken English: started in 1991, both as an institute for research on spoken English and as the administration office for the annual national oral English tests for English majors (TEM-4 and TEM-8), sponsored by China National Advisory Committee on University Foreign Language Major Education.
Center for Russian Studies:set up in 2013 and sponsored by the Ministry of Education, focusing on academic cooperation and exchanges between the university and Russian institutions in many fields of Russian Studies.
Center for Korean Studies: set up in 2010 and aimed at promoting Sino-Korean cultural exchanges and joint research, with a focus on Korean language, literature, history and East Asian relations.
Chinese-Nordic Cultural Centre: set up in 2009 and aimed at promoting cultural exchanges and research collaboration between China and the Nordic countries. Its major fields of research include literature and culture, environmental issues and international relations.
Bilingual Dictionary Research Center: set up in 1988 with a focus on bilingual lexicography, translation studies, corpus linguistics, language policy and bilingual terminology.

The School of Astronomy and Space Science of Nanjing University was established in March 2011, and its predecessor, the Department of Astronomy, was founded in 1952. It earns the longest history and a high reputation of all the astronomy departments in China. The school has cultivated many astronomers who are currently active in academic circles.
Today the school has 2 undergraduate programs, respectively under 2 departments, the Department of Astronomy and the Department of Space Science & Technology. It also consists of several laboratories, such as Key Laboratory of Modern Astronomy and Astrophysics, named by the Ministry of Education, Central Laboratory for Teaching, Solar Tower Laboratory, Center for Nonlinear Sciences, and Planetary Science and Deep Space Exploration Laboratory. Furthermore, the school owns the national first-level key discipline of astronomy, including two national second-level key disciplines: Astrophysics and Astrometry & Celestial Mechanics.
The school’s current research activities cover high-energy astrophysics, solar physics, galaxies and cosmology, extra-solar planets, aerospace dynamics, astrometry and space science.

In order to foster a new collaborative mode between universities and observatories, in 2010, Nanjing University, Purple Mountain Observatory and Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics & Technology signed an agreement aimed at jointly establishing the Center for Astronomy and Space Science on the Xianlin Campus of Nanjing University.
Moreover, after a series of discussions and consultations, Nanjing University, Peking University, National Astronomical Observatories, Purple Mountain Observatory and University of Science & Technology of China co-founded the Collaborative Innovation Center of Modern Astronomy and Space Exploration in December 2012.
The school also explores the channels of cooperation with overseas partners to push forward the process of internationalization and has established friendly and cooperative relationship with over 20 institutes of higher education in the USA, UK, Australia, Japan and so on. Its partners include Harvard University, California Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Kyoto University, University of California Santa Cruz, University of California Los Angeles, University of Tokyo, University of Sydney, and Paris Observatory.
In August 2014, the school moved into a new building which covers 12,000 square meters. The new building well meets the needs of research, experiments, teaching and academic activities, and will play a significant role in the school’s development in the decades to come.
In 1952, the Department of Astronomy, Nanjing University, was established, integrating the Department of Astronomy of Sun Yat-sen University and the Astronomy & Arithmetic Department of Qilu University. The director was Professor Zhao Que-min.
In 1955, the Department of Astronomy and the Department of Mathematics, Nanjing University, merged into the new Department of Mathematics & Astronomy.
In 1962, the Department of Astronomy was re-established and was headed by professor Dai Wen-sai.
From 1972 to 1976, the department enrolled 183 students. In 1977, the National College Entrance Examination was resumed, and the department began to recruit graduate students since 1978 and doctoral students since 1987.
In 1993, the Department of Astronomy was granted the title “National Training Bases of Astronomy Talents” and began to be funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
In March 2011, the School of Astronomy and Space Science was established.
Focus on supernovae and supernova remnants, Gamma-ray bursts and GRB cosmology, compact stars, high-energy cosmic rays and other relevant astronomical phenomena. The faculty plans to involve the most violent outbreaks in outer space, which will be quite significant for the study of evolution of stars, galaxies and the universe.

The research addresses the origin, structure and evolution of solar activities, especially the physical mechanisms of the most energetic solar eruptions such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections. Construction of the Time Domain Survey Telescope (TDST)
TDST focuses on searching of planets around bright star (Vmag<12) near North ecliptic Pole. It will provide the light curves of these bright stars with a high precision. Utilizing the light curves of G, K, F stars, planet candidates with period 1-5 year can be detected.
TDST will give star catalogues around North Ecliptic Pole before TESS, and is helpful to TESS mission. Additionally, the long period planets detected by TDST will be an important complementary for TESS and Plato. Planets around dwarfs are also expected. All these planets are suitable to be followed up by worldwide telescopes.

Nanjing University’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SSBS) was established in October 2008 on the basis of Department of Sociology.
SSBS offers three undergraduate programs under three departments: Sociology, Psychology, and Social Work and Social Policy. It has four master programs under these three departments and under the Social Anthropology Institute, which focuses on demography, anthropology, fundamental psychology and applied psychology.
In addition, SSBS’ Education Center for Master of Social Work (MSW Center) offers a course-based master program--Master of Social Work.
SSBS offers one Ph.D. in sociology program, where Ph.D. students study in the departments of psychology, social work and social policy, and in the Social Anthropology Institute, based on their research interests. SBSS also provides postdoctoral positions for PhD holders.
During the over-100-year development of Nanjing University, programs such as Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology and Social Work have a long historical standing.
The current Department of Sociology originates from the department of sociology established in 1928 at Nantional Central University and that established in 1930 at Jinling University.
The Department of Psychology stems from the department established in 1920 at Nanjing Higher Normal School (which was changed into National Southeast University in 1921 and National Central University in 1927).
The Social Anthropology Institute derives from the departments of sociology and boundary administration built in 1928 at National Central University.
The Department of Social Work and Social Policy, like the Department of Sociology, finds its origin in relative disciplines in the sociology departments of Central University and Jinling University.
After 1949, due to political and geographical reasons, these departments and disciplines, either cancelled (such as sociology) or relocated (such as psychology), successively disappeared in Nanjing University.
Since Nanjing University re-established its Department of Sociology in 1988, especially since 2001, reconstruction of departments and disciplines such as psychology, anthropology and social work has been the university’s academic mission. Of all measures taken, the establishment of Social Psychology Institute in 1993, the Social Anthropology Institute in 2002, and the Social Policy Institute in 2006 were key milestones. The 20-year (1998-2008) development of Department of Sociology and the establishment of the aforementioned three institutes have paved groundwork for the establishment of SSBS.
SSBS has an excellent faculty in psychology, anthropology, social work, social policy, demography, and sociology. Currently it has 47 full-time faculty members, of whom 18 are professors, 23 are associate professors and 6 are assistant professors. On the faculty, two are full-time international colleagues, and 16 graduated from reputed universities from US, UK, Germany, and Japan. There are also two part-time professors and four full-time research fellows with Ph.D. degrees.
On the faculty, there is one member of the State Council’s sociology appraisal group, one deputy director of the Ministry of Education’s sociology instruction committee, one “nationally renowned teacher,” one “renowned teacher overseas” by the Ministry of Education, two Distinguished Yangtse River Scholar Professors, two Nanjing University Distinguished Professors, one Nanjing University Yixing Chair Professos, four with the “governmental special allowances,” and five professors and associate professors selected into the “new-century talent” program of the Ministry of Education.
Since 2012, SSBS has made tremendous progress in teaching and research conditions with the generous donation of 24,000,000 yuan RMB by Mr. Cao Dewang , “China’s top philanthropist” and chairman of Fuyao Group. It has now two buildings with 105,000 square meters in total. In the buildings, there are two fieldwork bases for social surveys with 65 computers, an advanced telephone survey system with 25 IDD telephones, a reference room with 30,000 Chinese books and 3,000 English books, a “Sun Benwen-Pan Shu Speech Hall” with 250 seats, over 10 seminar rooms, and a “Jiangsu Province-Nanjing University Social and Behavioral Sciences Experimental Center” (under construction).
Currently, the student body includes over 260 undergraduate students, over 290 master and Ph.D. students.
SSBS’ faculty vigorously participates in various activities at home and abroad in social studies, and in social and economic development, earning high academic reputations and social honor for itself and for the university.
The Department of Sociology has a long history. It started out as the sociology departments at National Central University (1928) and Jinling University. The founder was Professor Sun Benwen , famous sociologist and director of the Higher Education Department of the Central Government of the Republic of China. It also originated from the psychology department of Nanjing Higher Normal School (1920), and its founder was Professor Ke Xiangfeng.
In 1983, 30 years after sociology was dissolved, Nanjing University established a sociology research office, which set up its master’s in sociology program in 1986, and the university thus became one of the first comprehensive universities to have re-established the discipline.
The Department of Sociology was set up in 1988. In 1996, Nanjing University became the third university in China to confer doctoral degrees in sociology, after Peking University and Renmin University.
Jiangsu Province Government confirmed Sociology in Nanjing University as “Jiangsu Key Discipline” in 2001, thus settling its crucial status in China.
The first head of the Department was Professor Song Linfei , the second was Professor Zhou Xiaohong, the third was Professor Feng Xiaotian, and the present is Professor Zhai Xuewei .
The Department of Psychology used to be a department of Nanjing Higher Normal School. Established in 1920 with a psychological lab, it was the first psychology department in China.
In 1921, as the normal school was converted to a university, the name was changed into Department of Psychology, National Southeast University, lying under the discipline of education and belonging to both sciences and liberal arts.
After 1927, National Southeast University was named National Central University. Mr. Pan Shu graduated from the United States and came back to China as an associate professor of psychology. Half a year later, he was promoted to a full professor and director of Department of Psychology.
In 1949, when Central University became Nanjing University, Pan Shu was the president.
In 1956, the department of psychology moved to Beijing and, together with the psychology research office of Chinese Academy of Sciences, constituted psychology research institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Pan Shu moved along and attended as its president. By then, Nanjing University’s psychology department ceased operation.
In 1993, Nanjing University Department of Sociology established first social psychology research institute among Chinese universities. Professor Zhou Xiaohong was the first director, and Professor Zhai Xuewei was the second. From then till now, the institute has been classified into Nanjing University Social and Cultural Research Center.
In 2007, psychological major was launched for bachelor and master degrees. In 2008, when Department of Sociology was transformed into School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Department of Psychology, which had been suspended for 50 years, restored. It now has one undergraduate program—psychology, and two research master programs—theoretical psychology and applied psychology. Professor Zhai Xuewei was the first head of the department, and Professor Zhou Renlai is the incumbent.
Social work major in Nanjing University has a long historical standing. Its history dated back to social work junior college of Central University in 1928 and Jinling University, which was the heartland of domestic theory and practice on social work. In May, 2001, social work educating and researching office was built. After social work major was approved by Ministry of Education, it started to offer undergraduate program. In October, 2008, Department of Social Work and Social Policy came into being. Restored social work major drives education and fieldwork by research, equips talents with solid theoretical knowledge, sophisticated social work skills and social survey capability, and provides specialists who are dedicated to jobs in social security, social policy study, social administrative management, social development and management, social service, planning and consulting, evaluation and operation for many industries. For instance, governmental organizations in education, civil affairs, labor personnel, social security, P.E., family planning, culture and hygiene; groups such as Communist Youth League, labor union, women’s federation; news and media including newspaper, broadcasting, and network; corporation like insurance company; consulting service industry; NGO organizations in social welfare, service and public welfare. Professor Chen Youhua is the first and current head of the department.
Founded in Feb., 2015, institute of Social Anthropology at Nanjing University now has seven faculty members. Though the institute is set up lately, Central University and Jinling University, predecessors of Nanjing University, were active in anthropological research and education. Such heatedly researched topics as urban-rural social studies, nationality and ethnic group studies in the institute today inherit the old tradition. However, on the other side, new topics are explored, for instance, environment and social change, cognitive anthropology, civil rights and civil awareness.
Professor Ke Fan, the founding and current director of the institute, together with his colleagues, graduated from prestigious universities and receives systemic and rigorous academic training. The institute started to offer research master program in 2005, and began to help training Ph.D. students in 2006. Presently, there are 13 master candidates and seven doctoral candidates studying in the Institute, and it has seven graduated Ph.D.’s and 35 graduated Master’s in the past years.

The School of Business, Nanjing University (NJUBS) traces its history back to the Business Section of the Sanjiang Normal College, which was founded in 1902. In the realignment of the departments of Chinese universities in 1952, economics and management at Nanjing University were moved to other universities. But in 1978, the university reestablished the Department of Economics and in 1986 reestablished the Department of Business Management. In1988, these two departments merged and became NJUBS.
Since its establishment, NJUBS has gradually developed a coordinated and multi-disciplinary body. Today, it has two schools. Established in 2002，the Software Institute (SWI) of Nanjing University (NJU) is one of the 35 national exemplary software schools approved by the Ministry of Education and the National Development and Reform Commission. The School of History is well-balanced in its disciplines, with 3 first-level disciplines: Chinese History, World History, and Archeology, and 5 sub-disciplines: Ancient Chinese History, Modern Chinese History, World History of Individual Countries, History of International Relations, and Historical Relic Identification.
In 1995, the school was selected by the State Ministry of Education as its personnel training and science research base for liberal arts.
In 1996, the State Ministry of Personnel approved the school’s establishment of its post-doctoral research circulation station. The school became one of the first in the country to be included in the national Project 211.
In 1998, after the appraisal by the State Council’s Academic Degrees Commission, the school was able to enroll doctoral students to its first level discipline of the study of history.

It was actually a combination in 1952 of the Department of History and the Department of Border Politics of the former National Central University and the Department of History of Jinling University.
With generations of scholars’ hard work over the past 100 years, the School of History has achieved great success in research and teaching and won a high reputation.
In the last Undergraduate Teaching Review by the Ministry of Education, the three first-level disciplines of World History, Chinese History, and Archeology were ranked as the 4th, 5th and 6th in the national ranking system. Such ranking made the School of History one of the top two in China (next to the History and Archeology School of Beijing University).
In recent years, professors of the school made enormous achievements in their respective research fields.
Professor Zhang Xianwen’s A Collection of Historical Materials Related to Nanjing Massacre and General History of Nanjing Massacre won the first prize of the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education.
Between Tradition and Reform: Origins of British Cultural Mode, co-authored by Professors Qian Chengdan and Chen Xiaolv, won the first prize for university research of the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education.
Professor Zhang Zhuming’s The Ancient Greek Tragicomedy (1-8) won the second government publishing prize.
Many other professors and teachers of the school also published many research papers of high-quality both at home and abroad and won fine academic reputation.
At present, the School of History has 75 faculty members, of whom 39 are professors, 24 are associate professors and 4 are lecturers. Of the young teachers, 90 percent have the experience of international academic exchange in countries such as USA, UK, Australia, Korea, Italy and so on.
Besides, the school has 18 faculty members who have received state research grants, 8 selected as the New Century Talents by the State Ministry of Education, 5 who are members of Project 333, and 6 joining in the Project Blue.

Kuang Yaming Honors School started from the Gifted Youth Program at Nanjing University in 1985. In its 30 years’ history, it evolved from the Department for Gifted Youth (1985-1990) to the Department for Intensive Instruction (1989-1997), to the School of Intensive Instruction in Sciences and Arts (1998-2005), and finally, to the present Kuang Yaming Honors School (2006- ).
A unique school in the university as a forerunner in the higher education reform in China, Kuang Yaming Honors School currently runs a pilot program for talent development by both the university and the Ministry of Education of China. It is also one of the National Training Bases for Talented Students in Fundamental Sciences certified by the Ministry of Education of China, and it runs the unique Project of the Interdisciplinary Sciences Education (also known as the Experimental Project for Overall Science Education).
In spite of its short history, the school has turned out nearly 2,000 graduates, of whom many are prominent in fields of research in such fundamental sciences as physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, and related interdisciplinary areas. Currently, as it pioneers in delivering general education in Nanjing University, Kuang Yaming Honors School has provided enriched instructions in Science, including Math, Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biochemistry. In the teaching of basic subjects, the school carries out the National Plan of Training of Outstanding Students.

The School of Architecture and Urban Planning gears itself towards the objective of bringing up high-level professionals specializing in architectural design, urban design, landscape planning and design, and urban and regional planning.
The School is comprised of the Department of Architecture and the Department of Urban Planning and Design.
The Department of Architecture has a solid base in architectural design research and architectural history and theory, and is carrying out cutting-edge studies in the emerging fields of urbanism, digital architecture and sustainable architecture.
The Department of Urban Planning and Design originated from human geography and economic geography and, based upon the strong urban sciences in Nanjing University, it fosters cross-disciplinary research and teaching towards urban and regional planning.
The School has a doctoral program in architectural design and theory, three master’s programs in architectural history and theory, architectural design and theory, and urban planning and design, and a master of engineering program in architecture and civil engineering. The school’s student design projects have received more than 100 international and national awards.
Currently the school has 58 full-time faculty members, of whom 18 are professors and 15 are associate professors. Most of them have both work and study experience in leading higher education institutions at home and abroad, and they excel in invention and project engineering. The school is actively engaged in international exchange. To date, it has established an extensive international academic exchange network and a long-term cooperative and exchange mechanism. In 2012, the University of Cambridge – Nanjing University Research Centre on Architecture and Urbanism (CNRCAU) was jointly founded by the two universities as a platform and laboratory to conduct innovative and multidisciplinary research on contemporary architecture and urbanism.
In 2015, the Nanjing University - Syracuse University International Center for Green Building and Urban Environment was jointly founded by the two universities focusing on research in sustainable building technology.

The Department of Computer Science and Technology traces its history back to 1958, when the university’s Department of Mathematics set up three computer-related majors, computational technology, computational mathematics and mathematical logic.
The Department of Computer Science was established in 1978 and later on in 1993 was renamed to the Department of Computer Science and Technology. In 1981, it was authorized to confer doctoral degrees, one of the earliest in China, and in 1990, it completed the State Key Laboratory for Novel Software Technology.
At present, the department has a highly-competitive faculty of over 100 members, including the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, chair professors of Cheung Kong Scholars Program, and winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund and the Thousand Youth Talents Plan.

As one of the pioneering institutions dedicated to environmental education and research in China, the School of Environmental Studies, Nanjing University, started in 1978 and remains a leading institution in environmental research in China. The school is ranked No.3 of all the university environmental science and engineering programs in China proper, according to the 2012 review of the Ministry of Education (MOE).
The school has 81 faculty members, including 37 professors and 39 associate professors, with one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and one with the title “the Most Famous Teacher for Undergraduate Teaching.” In addition, it has 5 “Changjiang Scholar Chair Professors of MOE,” 2 “NSF Distinguished Young Scholars,” 4 “NationalThousand Talent Professors,” 2 “National Ten-Thousand Talent Professors,” 6 “NSF Excellent Young Scientists,” and 11 “MOE New Century Talent Professors.”

The school is enlisted amongst the first national bases for teaching and research in basic sciences. Its Demonstration Center for Experiment Teaching was ranked No. 1 in the first national assessment of Experiment Teaching Center for Excellence launched in 2005. Five of the foundation chemistry courses were recognized as the Nationally Excellent Courses. Two teaching contingents have been selected as the State Teaching Contingents by the Ministry of Education. The school has received more than 30 national and provincial teaching awards and many other honorary titles. The school recruits about 150 undergraduate and 270 graduate students each year.
Since 2010, the school has received more than 200 grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The annual research funds for the school have reached about 140 million yuan. According to the statistics of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), the number of papers published by the faculty of the school and their total citation are among the top 1‰ in the global research institutions, respectively ranking at the 16th and 28th. The Institute for International Students is an administrative office as well as an academic school. As an administrative office, it is responsible for the enrollment, administration, and logistics of all the international students at Nanjing University. As an academic school, it runs two undergraduate programs, one graduate program, and a number of non-degree Chinese language and culture programs.
Nanjing University is one of the top tier universities in China and is also one of the first to enroll international students in mainland China. Each year, over 3,000 international students study on campuses of Nanjing University. The Law School, Nanjing University, was officially rebuilt in 1994. Its precursor was the Law School of National Central University, which was established in 1928 and became a leading institute in Chinese legal education and research as it graduated or recruited many famous jurists such as Xie Guansheng, Zhou Gengsheng, Qian Duansheng, Wang Tieya, and Han Depei. In the “grand adjustment of colleges and departments” of 1952, it was closed down. In 1981, however, the university re-established the law department and started to enroll students. The department became the law school in 1994.
The school’s faculty currently has 57 full-time teachers, including 24 professors (among whom 20 are doctoral advisers), 28 associate professors and 5 lecturers. It also has 3 full-time researchers and 17 administrative staff. Of the faculty members, 61 have doctoral degrees, of whom 9 obtained their degrees overseas.
The Law School has 7 research institutes, the Sino-Deutsch Law Research Institute (Deutsch-chinesisches Institut für Rechtswissenschaft), the Chinese Law Case Research Center, the Law of Asia-Pacific Region Research Institute, the Crime Prevention and Control Institute, the Housing Policy and Real Estate Law Research Center, the Economic Law Research Institute, and the Economic Criminal Law Institute.
The school publishes several academic journals such as Nanjing University Law Review, Jahrbuch des Deutsch-chinesisches Institut für Rechtswissenschaft der Universitäten Göttingen and Nanjing University.
Since the re-establishment of the law major in 1981, the law school has worked hard and has made great achievements in legal education and research. According to the assessment made by the Ministry of Education in 2012, its law discipline ranked eleventh in the country and seventh among the nation’s comprehensive universities.
The school boasts of a highly qualified faculty. One faculty member has won the title of the First National Ten Outstanding Young Jurists, and four have the title of the New Century Excellent Talents.
The school has its undergraduate program, Juris Master’s and Master’s degree programs, Ph.D. programs, and post-doctoral research stations. The School of Electronic Science and Engineering (SESE) traces its history back to the radiophysics and semi-conductor physics programs founded at Nanjing University in the 1950s. For the last few years, the university has made efforts to develop its academic disciplines and enhance its strength in fields of high and new technology and engineering and in 2009, developed the disciplines of electronic science and technology and information and communication engineering into the School of Electronic Science and Engineering, with the help of No. 14 and No.50 Research Institutes of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation.
SESE is the university’s important base for talent cultivation and scientific research with support by by Project 211 and Project 985. It consists of four departments, namely, electronic engineering, microelectronics and optoelectronics, information electronics, and communication engineering. The four departments cover two “first-level disciplines” (Electronic Science and Technology, and Information and Communication Engineering). The school has two National Key Disciplines: Microelectronics and Solid State Electronics, and Radiophysics.

The School of Geographic and Oceanographic Sciences (SGOS) is now comprised of 118 faculty and staff members and 980 undergraduates and postgraduates, and offers one National Key Discipline in physical geography and three Provincial Key Disciplines in cartography and GIS, land use and planning (human geography), and marine Geography.
SGOS has taken a distinct role in academic circles while receiving recognition and praise in such fields as Earth surface processes and environmental changes, carbon cycle and land-atmosphere remote sensing, coastal zone environment and resources, regional sustainable development and land use, as well as tourism geography.
Over the past three years, SGOS has presided over 10 projects, including projects and research tasks under the 973 Program and the 863 Program, major programs supported by the National Social Science Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as special research projects for public industrial sectors. SGOS has published more than 100 academic papers in journals collected by the Scientific Citation Index (SCI). SGOS has newly established three innovative research teams respectively honored by the National Natural Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education and the Jiangsu provincial government.
SGOS faculty members have won many awards and honors over the past three years, including the second prize of the National Natural Science Award (2010), second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (2009), first prize of the Ministry of Land and Resources S&T Award (2012), first prize of the National Mapping Technology Progress Award (2009), and the honorary membership of the French Geographical Society and INQUA (2010).
SGOS is a major national training base for scientific researchers and teachers in geography with its internship centers in Lushan Mountain, Lianyungang, and Ningzhen areas. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and graduate programs, including post-doctoral stations, and has established innovative training programs such as the “Lake Baikal in Russia Comprehensive Scientific Investigation” and the “Taiwan Earth Science Comprehensive Joint Teaching Visits.”
In recent years, SGOS faculty and students have received many accolades and awards, such as the Award for Distinguished University Teachers and the National Award for Excellent Teaching, the state-level best university course title for two courses, two honors for provincial-level outstanding doctoral dissertations and five honors for provincial-level outstanding master’s theses, as well as the Academic Award for New and Outstanding Doctoral Candidates by the Ministry of Education.
SGOS faculty comprises a number of prestigious scientists and scholars, including Li Jijun and Wang Ying, both Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chen Yuchuan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as winners of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, including Gao Shu, Gu Chaoli, Zhou Chenghu, Gong Peng, Shi Zhong, Lu Huayu, and Li Xin.
SGOS has also built a series of scientific research and teaching platforms, such as the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Coast and Island Development, Jiangsu Branch of the National Remote Sensing Center, National Demonstration Center for Experiment and Teaching in Earth Sciences, and Demonstration Center for Experiment and Teaching in Geographic and Oceanographic Sciences for the universities in Jiangsu Province.
To meet the challenge of resource development and environmental protection in China, the SGOS faculty and students have participated in the planning aid programs for Tibet's development and the master planning of land use in Jiangsu Province. They have presided over the development of Rules of Drawing for Master Planning of Land Use in the City, County and Township, which has produced significant social benefits after being implemented nationwide.
They have undertaken a series of major engineering tasks and special projects in the national high-resolution earth observation system and coast and island development, including the launch of Digital South China Sea and remote sensing and monitoring of the resources and environment in the South China Sea and its surrounding areas, and the research of China’s forest carbon sink which has provided the government with the scientific tools and knowledge to make decisions on climate change negotiations and carbon emission trading.
The faculty and students have also been actively involved in the study of African geography by hosting a number of seminars on “Going to Africa for Development” and publishing books including the Records and Maps of Agriculture in Africa. In addition, SGOS has made significant contributions to regional planning, tourism resources planning and other areas. Its professors serve as deputy editors or editorial members of dozens of SCI journals and major academic publications in China, and over 20 professors serve as vice chairs or directors of state-level academic societies.

The School of Atmospheric Sciences at Nanjing University is the cradle of modern meteorological education and research in China. In the 1920s, Dr. Coching Chu founded the Department of Geoscience at the National Southeast University (which later on became National Central University). The National Central University established the country's first department of meteorology in 1944, and later became part of the reorganized Nanjing University in 1952. In 1986, the Department of Meteorology was renamed the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, which was promoted to the level of college within the university and gained its current name of School of Atmospheric Sciences in 2008.
Over the years, the atmospheric science program at Nanjing University has established itself as a leading school for atmospheric science education and research, where students and researchers are inspired to seek advanced knowledge and scientific advancement and innovation and make their marks in the world. The program has been a key supplier of advanced-level research and operational meteorologists to the country, including more than 7,000 meteorological professionals, producing many professors, researchers, and outstanding operational weather forecasters. Among them are 12 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.
