Nanjing University focuses its graduate education on the grand aim of building itself into a leading international university. Nanjing University has been actively promoting the internationalization of its graduate education and seeking new ways of student cultivation and collaborative research. It has established several institutions with overseas universities, such as the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies, the Sino-German Institute for Legal Studies and the Center for Sino-Japanese Cultural Studies. These institutions have cultivated many “backbone talents” for the cultural and educational development and thus have created great impact at home and abroad.
The overall quality of graduate education of Nanjing University has improved in a steady pace and has made satisfying achievements. The university’s Graduate School has successively won the first prizes in Jiangsu Province Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award in 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2011. In the tenth anniversary after the issuing of the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees, 20 graduates from Nanjing University were granted the title “Chinese Doctoral and Master's Degree Recipients who Made Outstanding Contributions in Work” by the State Council and Ministry of Education. Forty-four Ph.D. dissertations have been awarded the title the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation, and 56 Ph.D. dissertations have been nominated for this title. In addition, 25 teaching textbooks by the university faculty have been recommended as the National Graduate Student Textbooks by the Ministry of Education and Office of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.
