School of the Environment
Introduction
As one of the pioneering institutions dedicated to environmental education and research in China, the School of Environmental Studies, Nanjing University, started in 1978 and remains a leading institution in environmental research in China. The school is ranked No.3 of all the university environmental science and engineering programs in China proper, according to the 2012 review of the Ministry of Education (MOE).
The school has 81 faculty members, including 37 professors and 39 associate professors, with one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and one with the title “the Most Famous Teacher for Undergraduate Teaching.” In addition, it has 5 “Changjiang Scholar Chair Professors of MOE,” 2 “NSF Distinguished Young Scholars,” 4 “NationalThousand Talent Professors,” 2 “National Ten-Thousand Talent Professors,” 6 “NSF Excellent Young Scientists,” and 11 “MOE New Century Talent Professors.”
Over the past 5 years, the school has been awarded with more than 500 projects from the National Water Pollution Control and Treatment Major Project, National 863 Program, National 973 Program, and National Science Foundation of China, totaling 500 million yuan.
The faculty of the school has published more than 1,000 SCI/SSCI papers including 150 in EST and other top journals, and owns 285 national patents and 12 international patents. Over the past 10 years, the school has received 6 honors from the National Natural Science Awards, National Technological Invention Awards, and National Science and Technology Progress Awards, and more than 10 other awards from both the national and local governments.
Based on the specialty of its faculty members and the needs of the national and local governments, the school has established 18 competitive research groups focusing on various disciplines and serving the growing needs of environmental protection.
The school has established cooperation with universities, organizations and enterprises in different parts of the world. It has carried out more than 20 current international projects and hosted more than 20 international conferences.
It offers 12 undergraduate and graduate courses and a number of summer courses with English as the medium of instruction. In collaboration with 15 top universities and research institutes, the school established the “International Institute for Environmental Studies” in 2015.
Programs
The school has three departments: Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Planning and Management. It enrolls over 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students and offers four majors: environmental chemistry, environmental biology, environmental engineering, and environmental planning and management.

To meet the needs of environmental protection in China, the school has developed an integrated innovative chain of “basic education - fundamental research - technical development - serving society.”
