Drama and Film Studies 

  

Nanjing University’s discipline of drama and film studies is a first-level discipline authorized to confer doctoral degrees. It is a homebase for drama, film & television research with significant influence both at home and abroad. The doctorate program of Theater and Chinese Traditional Opera under this discipline enjoys a long history and is academically the strongest of all programs of the same discipline within China. With eight doctoral advisors, it has the first-rate faculty and academic achievements in China and enjoys a good academic reputation abroad.


Recent years have witnessed a blossom in film and television studies, drawing on more and more research forces and generating greater and greater academic influence. Over the years, the program has undertaken major national, provincial and ministrarial research subjects. The abundant research grants provide superior research conditions for post-doctoral and other researchers. The program also boasts its rich library resources and other research facilities. It has an enjoyable academic atmosphere.

Main research areas: history of Chinese traditional operas, Chinese modern and contemporary drama, film history and theories, film theories and criticism, study of media art, drama aesthetics, theory of drama, stagecraft evolution of modern Chinese drama, theory and practice of teleplays.
