    Urban modernization research center of Jiangsu Province (Institute of Urban Science, Nanjing University)

      

    Urban science focuses on urban social structure change, urban development, urban problems and urban governance in the view of cross disciplinary.

      

    Institute of Urban Science, Nanjing University (IUS) was founded in 2009 rooted from the researching center of urban modernization in Jiangsu Province set up in 2003. IUS focuses on significant issues at home and abroad for a long time, including urban change and development strategy, urban issues, urban culture, urban and rural development, urban governance, beautiful countryside construction. In addition, IUS has been engaged in social practice, practiced the academic idea and transform the research result. IUS set up Profound Think Forum, published the journal of China Ancient City.

      

    Specialists and experts of IUS have been undertaken hundreds research programs of national social science fund and other funds. IUS has published more than 100 books like urban scheming books, urban study translations, urban brand books, comparative urban studies and more than 400 research papers on urban science. The fund supported researches include the Jiangsu characteristic urban development study, Jiangsu mid-small town development road and pattern, the study on characteristic cultural cities in China and so on. The books include the Urban Culture Capital, Urban Positioning Study, New Urbanization Road and Pattern, Urban Sociology of Culture, Space and Structure and so on. IUS has cultivated more than 100 graduate students and doctoral students. This research results which have been recognized and praised in society positively promote the scientific development of Chinese cities and the process of urbanization in China. Under constant and strenuous efforts of teachers and students, IUS has developed into an important think tank based on urban research in China.

      

    The IUS has established many wide relationships with other academic organizations such as the Jiangsu urban economy association, Jiangsu urban strategy think-tank, and the global thought committee of Columbia University of the U.S. IUS have translated several classical urban books and held the Sino-American Urban Academic Saloon.

  • Jiangsu Economic Internationalization Research Center

    Jiangsu Economic Internationalization Research Center


    “Jiangsu Economic Internationalization Research Center” was founded in 2011 in Nanjing University. The center is expected to integrate the social science researchers in Jiangsu province and even in China, as well as practitioners who have a lot of relevant working experiences, to study the strategic policy of Jiangsu for the effective development of its open economy. The center focuses on the forward-looking thoughts and operational policy recommendations, in order to expand the opening-up and stimulate the transformation of Jiangsu's economy.

      

    Professor Zhang Erzhen is responsible for the whole center. The chief experts of this center are: Ma Minglong, director general of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Commerce, Pei Changhong, director of the Institute of Economics, CASS, Zhang Erzhen, professor of Nanjing University. Major members are professors (Yu Jinping, Ma Yeqing, Han Jian), associate professors (An Liwei, Feng Fan) in Nanjing University, Dai Xiang, professor of Nanjing Audit University, Yang Jijun, associate professor of Nanjing University of Finance and Economics, Dr. Zhang Li, Institute of World Economics, Jiangsu Academy of Social Sciences, Zhu Yimin, deputy director general of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Commerce, Ni Haiqing, director of colligated office, Xia Wangsheng, director of Institute for International Trade.etc.

      

    Thirteen decision-making consulting projects have been undertaken and completed by 2016 including one major project and four key projects. Four consulting reports were accepted by Decision-making Consultation, social sciences circles 'union of Jiangsu Province. Two decision-making reports have been approved by provincial Party committee secretary. Two have been approved by provincial vice-governor. There are also three published by Research Report, Government Research Office of Jiangsu Province. Report named Industrial Selection for 'Going Global' Enterprises of Jiangsu Province was adopted by Jiangsu Department of Commerce as an important reference for the formulation of catalogue of Industries for guiding enterprises' “going-out”. Most of the research results were published in newspapers and journals.

  • Research Center for China’s New Literature

    New Chinese Literature Research Center, Nanjing University  


    New Chinese Literature Research Center, Nanjing University, was among the first batch of research institutions nominated by the State Ministry of Education as a Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences in December 1999.  


    Since its establishment, the center has built its research forces with concentrations on thoughts of modern Chinese literature, native literature in 20th century China, schools of modern Chinese literature, history of modern Chinese drama, literature in Chinese in Taiwan, Hong Kong and foreign countries, and Enlightenment thinking and 20th century Chinese literature. The center aims to become an authority in research on new Chinese literature. It has organized academic events andactivities such as hosting national and international conferences, putting out the academic journal Modern Chinese Literature Research, and compiling books Jiming Series (Books 1 & 11) and New Chinese Literature Studies Series.


    The center used to be called Modern Chinese Literature Research Center before it was renamed New Chinese Literature Research Center in 2010. Its current director is Professor Ding Fan.

    Research Center for the History of the Republic of China


    Research Center for the History of the Republic of China at Nanjing University was authorized in September 2000 by the Ministry of Education to be a Key Humanities and Social Science Research Base. It is also one of the earliest institutions in mainland China to be engaged in the study of the history of the Republic of China.  


    The center has attracted a large number of high-caliber scholars from at home and abroad to establish an academic platform for promoting the studies on the history of the Republic of China. Its construction and development over the past 30 years has brought broad recognition of its achievements and contributions among the academic circles at home and abroad. Now it has become a national key research base, regarded as “advanced in China and renowned in the world.”


  • Research Center for the Economic and Social Development of the Yangtze Delta

    Yangtze River Delta Economics and Social Development Research Center 



    The Yangtze River Delta Economics and Social Development Research Center of Nanjing University became a National Key Humanities and Social Sciences Research Base (economics) at the approval of the Ministry of Education in 2001 and is now an important research institution of the university.  


    Built jointly by the Ministry of Education and Nanjing University, the center has attracted many talents of high quality who come to the center to conduct their teaching, research and social services. Meanwhile, the center tries the integrations of its organization and personnel flow, internal and external cooperation, competition and innovation, and production and research. Now, its research focuses on social issues related to economic operation and development in the Yangtze River Delta.  


    As a national key research base, the center’s goal is to establish a mechanism of research innovation, reach the advanced level in the domestic industry, make first-class scientific research achievements and become a national research base that is worthy of its name. Besides, it aims to becoming a national academic exchange and information base for economics by means of holding wide-ranging and high-level academic activities.   • Research Center for the Study of Marxism

    Center for Studies of Marxist Social Theory  


    The Center for Studies of Marxist Social Theory (CSMST) at Nanjing University was founded in early 2005. It focuses its studies on the following three main areas: 

    • Classic Marxist social theories 

    • Marxist social development theories in modern China

    • Contemporary Marxist social critical theories abroad. 


    By integrating various perspectives from sociology, political science, history, and economics with Marxist philosophy, the center critically assesses the theoretical achievements of different social theories in the Marxian tradition in order to construct a Marxist social theory framework with Chinese characteristics that addresses the social changes and challenges of China’s modernization over the last four decades.  


    Over the last ten years, the center has established close cooperative relationships with a number of important international institutions in the field of Marxist studies, for example, the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam and the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History (which has most of Marx and Engels’ original manuscripts), and Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (which published the newest edition of Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe). The center also has close association with distinguished scholars in the field of Marxist studies and contemporary critical theories worldwide. Jacques Derrida, Slavoj Žižek, Catherine Malabou, Bernard Stiegler, and David Harvey are among the scholars who visited the center.

  • Research Center for National Culture Industry

    National Cultural Industry Research Center


    The National Culture Industry Research Center of Nanjing University was set up at the approval of the State Ministry of Culture in January 2007. Its predecessor was the Institute of Cultural Development of the university. In 2007, it became one of those in the first batch of the Ministry-of-Culture approved research centers.  


    The center’s research focuses on major theoretical and practical problems encountered in the development of cultural industry in China. It explores an effective model of the cultural industry development and trains cultural industry research personnel and senior management personnel. On the basis of the consistent development and integration of cultural-industry-related research findings and education resources, it makes efforts to build an open, high-level cultural industry research center of China.  


    Since its establishment, the center has been active in organizing various academic activities such as organizing international conferences like the Joint International Symposium on Cultural Space in Creative Cities and publishing journals and books like Cultural Industry Research (13 issues),  Cultural Industry Economics and Cultural Heritage Economics.  


    The center has post-doctoral, doctoral and master programs and has a contingent of active, capable and high-level researchers. The major research projects the center has completed and is working on include the following:  

    • Reform in Cultural System during the Economic Transition and the Development of Cultural Industry, Development, one of the Important Projects invited to bid by the Central Publicity Department of CPC

    • Research on the Strategies, Ideas, Models, Approaches and Policies of Building up Jiangsu as a Strong Cultural Province, one of the Important Projects sponsored by the 2010 University Philosophy and Social Science Research Fund

    • Dynamic Mechanisms Study on Creative Industry Space Evolution from the Perspective of Evolutionary Economic Geography, a project sponsored by the 2013 National Natural Science Fund

    • Market Segmentation and Non-Economic Barriers in the Process of Culture Industry Market Integration in the Yangtze River Delta, an Important Project by the State Ministry of Culture

    • The State Council’s Several Suggestions on Promoting the Integrated Development of Cultural Creativity and Design Services with Related Industries


    The center is also engaged in international communication and exchange with famous universities all around the world like the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Tokyo University and University of Southampton.

    China Centre for Linguistic and Strategic Studies



    The China Center for Linguistic and Strategic Studies (CCLSS) is a research center set up at Nanjing University in 2007, co-sponsored by the university and the State Language Commission. Its objective is to encourage interdisciplinary studies of language policies, language planning and language strategies and to promote cooperation in these areas both at home and abroad.  


    The current director of the center is Professor Shen Yang, who is a chair professor of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program and director of the Department of Linguistics, School of Liberal Arts, Nanjing University.  


    Apart from conducting original research, the center works as a hub of knowledge and information. Its activities include providing information services, constructing international networks and setting up international cooperative projects and research programs. In this way, it functions as a window of China for international scholars and contributes to the mutual understanding between China and the outside world.  


    The center considers academic cooperation indispensable to its research and thus promotes, facilitates and initiates academic cooperation at home and abroad. One of these is the International Research Network on Urban Language Survey (IRN-ULS), a cooperative network of research institutions and individual scholars, which specializes in sociolinguistic studies of urbanization in a global perspective and serves scholars from different parts of the world for exchanging research results in forms of discussion, seminars and conferences. Since 2007, the center has become the host of the Forum on National Strategies of Languages.  


    The center also strives to link up with non-academic groups in society such as business figures, policy makers and the media by providing consultancy and information services, making the expertise on language planning available to the public.

  • Center for Risk, Disaster and Crisis Research

    Center for Risk, Disaster and Crisis Research



    Center for Risk, Disaster & Crisis Research (CRDCR), Nanjing University, established in 2005, is the leading center in research on the management of risks, disasters and crises in China.


    CRDCR is aimed at developing an emerging discipline focusing on the non-routine management of risks in society. Over the past ten years, the center has been working on the theoretical framework for the emerging discipline as well as policy solutions as the adaptive capacity of emergency management in complex environments.


    Internationally, the center has developed collaboration with leading research institutions such as the Center for Disaster Management at University of Pittsburgh and the Program of Crisis Leadership at Harvard University.


    In 2014, CRDCR, with the support of the Tang's Foundation in the USA, started to initiate a project in developing a multi-disciplinary network of risk, disaster, and crisis research in China, which includes tasks of case collection, research community building, and laboratory simulation.

  • Research Center for Southern-Jiangsu’s Leading Realization of Basic Modernization

    Research Center for Southern-Jiangsu’s Leading the Way in Early-Stage Modernization  


    The Research Center for Southern-Jiangsu’s Leading the Way in Early-Stage Modernization was established in 2012 with Professor Hong Yingxing, a prominent economist and distinguished professor of Nanjing University, as its chief specialist. The center is supported by the university’s Research Center for Socio-Economic Development of Yangtze River Delta, a national key research base of humanities and social sciences. It is also approved by the provincial philosophical and social science planning office to be a Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Base of Jiangsu.  


    Southern Jiangsu has always been staying on top nation-wide in its socio-economic development. In 2007, this area met in all aspects Jiangsu’s standards for an all-around moderately prosperous society. As a pioneer in achieving early-stage modernization, the area is leading the way of modernization for the entire country. Therefore, the center tries to use advanced theories and research paradigms to summarize the experiences and methods of Southern Jiangsu and provide replicable models and systematic measures for the whole of the country in the course of modernization. Under the strategic arrangements of the Jiangsu provincial CPC committee and provincial government, the center strives to develop forward-looking theoretical studies as a think tank, make timely, practical and theory-backed proposals and suggestions with regard to the development of Jiangsu, and make the successful experience of Southern Jiangsu’s lead in early-stage modernization into a model for the entire province and the country in the course of modernization.

As an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental public opinion study center, the research base provides a place of resource sharing and research exchange for related institutions and departments. By taking full advantage of the academic resources, it focuses on cutting-edge issues, prospective investigations, global situations and strategic problems related to social public opinion analysis, public opinion monitoring, and social governance innovation.     Center for the Studies of Contemporary Foreign Literature and Culture


    The Center for the Studies of Contemporary Foreign Literature and Culture is founded in 2006 and is one of the university’s Key Research Institutes of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The Center aims to promote research in four main fields of study: 

    • Contemporary foreign literature studies

    • Contemporary foreign literary and cultural theory studies

    • Literary translation and cultural relations studies

    • Language and culture studies.  


    The staff of the center have undertaken a number of state- or province-funded research projects which aim to give new insights into the study of foreign literature and culture. Some of these are: Post-WWII Foreign Literature and World History, Contemporary Foreign Literature, Contemporary Foreign Literary and Cultural Theories, Nobel Prize-Winning Authors, Globalization and Intercultural Studies, and French Translation and Reception of Contemporary Chinese Literature.

    The Public Affairs & Local Governance Research Center of Nanjing University was founded in 1997 and was one of the first group of research institutions nominated as the Key Philosophy and Social Science Research Centers of Jiangsu Province.  


    The center is devoted to studies of government administration and governmental processes, local governance and public policy, political psychology and political culture, social stability and crisis management, and NGO and citizenship behavior.  


    Since 2013, the center has been holding an annual academic workshop on “Political culture, political psychology and behavior” in cooperation with prominent scholars at home and abroad, and it has published a well-received Studies Series of Social Stability (in China).

    Center for Research in Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and Traditional Chinese Culture



    Nanjing University Center for Research in Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and Traditional Chinese Culture was authorized in December 2010 to become one of the key bases of higher institutions of Jiangsu Province. The center bases its work on the university’s philosophy and religion departments and Chinese Philosophers Research Center, and as a result, it enjoys the advantage of interdisciplinary subjects, research, talents and management.  


    The center’s fields of research include the relationships between Confucianism and traditional Chinese culture and between Buddhism and traditional Chinese culture as well as the interplay between Confucianism-Buddhism-Daoism and Jiangsu’s regional cultures and schools of learning. The center’s research aim is to conduct comprehensive and profound research on traditional Chinese culture, especially on its core components Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. The exploration and enrichment of the fine tradition of Chinese culture is to be applied to current culture practice in order to promote the research of traditional culture and the construction of contemporary culture.

  • Center for Human Resource Development in Jiangsu Company

    Corporate Human Resource Development Research Center of Jiangsu Province  


    The competition between businesses is ultimately the competition in human resources. As Jiangsu Province is changing from a province strong in manufacturing to one strong in innovation, corporate human resource management plays an important promoting role.  


    The Corporate Human Resource Development Research Center of Jiangsu Province is jointly sponsored by Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education and Nanjing University. It was a theoretical and practical research center operating with the joint efforts of Nanjing University’s Business School and Jiangsu Provincial Economic and Information Technology Commission. Since its establishment in 2011, the center has focused its research on the important issues on human resource management faced by Jiangsu’s enterprises, such as the human resource development strategy in Jiangsu’s enterprises, start-up human resource management, labor relations and collective bargaining in Jiangsu’s enterprises, and the management of employees of a new generation in Jiangsu’s enterprises.


    Under the leadership of Professor Zhao Shuming, the research base has taken full advantage of its extensive contacts with academia and industry, carrying out a series of activities such as Jiangsu’s Young Entrepreneur Training Program, Jiangsu’s Women Entrepreneur Training Program, Drucker Forum and National Human Resource Teacher Training Program, all of which generated widespread social impact. Currently, the center publishes an academic journal Human Resource Management Review.

    Center of African Studies


    Our History


    In 1964, the Research Institute of African Economic Geography was established to help strengthen China’s relationship with African countries. From 1964 to 1993, with its main research fields focusing on Africa’s economic geography, the institute published a series of papers, books and reports. These were the earliest academic studies of Africa in our country, and they helped Chinese to gain a better understanding of the African Continent.


    The time from the late 1970s to the 1990s witnessed a thriving period of African studies at Nanjing University, with many academic achievements, especially in African geographic studies. In 1979, the African Study Society was established with its headquarters set at Nanjing University. The members of the society reached over 500 at that time. In 1993, the Center of African Economic Geography was renamed the Center of African Studies of Nanjing University (CASNJU). Its research fields have expanded since then, covering geographic studies, Sino-African economic relationships, studies of Africa’s traditional culture, history and geopolitics. 



    In recent years, the center has become a base for multidisciplinary studies with faculty not only from Nanjing University, but also from other institutions and enterprises at home. It has been nominated one of the Higher Learning Institutions International Studies Research Centers of Jiangsu Province and has been active in promoting international cooperation and academic exchange.

  • The Diane and Guilford Glazer Institute for Jewish and Israel Studies

    Diane and Guilford Glazer Institute for Jewish and Israel Studies



    The Diane and Guilford Glazer Institute for Jewish and Israel Studies, Nanjing University, was established in May 1992 to meet a growing demand for Judaic studies in China and to promote the study of Jewish culture among Chinese college students and establish a better understanding between the two peoples after full diplomatic relations between China and Israel were established in January 1992. Since 2001, the institute has increasingly responded to the needs of its expanding programs with a series of fund raising activities. Thanks to a most generous gift from the Diane and Guilford Glazer Fund and donations from many individuals, the institute is now in its current location with a space of over 3,000 square feet, housing a conference hall, a director room, a study room, a lecture hall, and a library. In order to express its gratitude and appreciation, the institute was renamed the Diane and Guilford Glazer Institute of Jewish Studies in November 2006. In May 2012 with the establishment of a Diane and Guilford Glazer Endowment at Nanjing University, the institute started to use its current name to emphasize its determination to deepen its study of Israel.  


    Due to its great efforts and its worldwide ties to Jewish academic circles over the last 20 years, the institute is increasingly recognized as a leader in its field and an important resource for information and guidance in China, serving not only locally but also nationally.  


    Actively participating in international academic activities and launching exchange programs are unique features of the institute, whose faculty members have visited countries such as the United States, Israel, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Germany. Many of its students regularly study or conduct research at Israeli universities. Through these activities, the institute has established strong international ties with Jewish academic circles and Jewish organizations in various parts of the world.

  • Center for Experimental Social and Behavioral Research of Jiangsu Province

    Experimental Social and Behavioral Research Center of Jiangsu Province  


    The Experimental Social and Behavioral Research Center of Jiangsu Province was established in 2015. The current director is Professor Zhou Renlai. It is composed of a diverse faculty with three professors, eight associate professors and three assistant professors and lecturers. It has post-doctoral researchers and graduate students from a number of different disciplines who are interested in addressing the overarching question of why humans behave the way they do in dynamic, real-world environments.


    Specifically, the center’s research areas include reward and value-based decision making, emotion and memory, dehumanization, spatial cognition, social well-being, psychotherapy, environmental psychology and human-computer interface. To explore topics in these areas, the center builds on theories, concepts and approaches from a variety of traditional disciplines including Psychology, Economics, Cognitive Neuroscience, Computer Science and Sociology. It also uses a wide array of techniques to study behavior and brain function, including computational modeling, functional brain imaging and EEG, Neuro-pharmacology, psychophysics, trans-cranial magnetic stimulation and lesion approaches.

    Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Data Engineering and Knowledge Service (JKL-DEKS) was established in 2014, at the support of Nanjing University and Jiangsu Institute of Scientific and Technical Information. It is the first key laboratory in the field of social sciences at Nanjing University. Guided by the national big-data strategy, the laboratory focuses on the key technologies and hot frontiers, for setting up research platforms of big-data application and knowledge innovation.  


    Since its establishment, the laboratory has engaged in the following studies: 

    • Data integration and planning in big-data environment

    • Knowledge correlation and organization of data

    • Theories, methods and applications of information analysis

    • Knowledge service with key technology

    • Professional knowledge base and platform of knowledge services.

  • Jiangsu “Two-Leading” Research Institute

    Jiangsu’s “Two-Leads” Research Institute  


    Founded in 2011, the Jiangsu’s “Two-Leads” Research Institute was initiated by Professor Hong Yinxing, a prominent economist and former Chancellor of Nanjing University. The institute is supported by the School of Economics of Nanjing University, which is ranked the first in the economics discipline in Jiangsu Province and the fourth in theoretical economics in the country. It is a policy-making advisory and research agency for Jiangsu Province, approved and accredited by the Allied Philosophy and Social Sciences Association of Jiangsu Province.  


    The “Two Leads” refers to the aim that Jiangsu leads the way in building up an all-round well-off society and leads the way in achieving the basic level of modernization. As Jiangsu’s economic development consistently stays on top nation-wide, there is no readily replicable experience of realizing the “Two Leads.” Therefore, the institute is tasked to summarize, with cutting-edge theories and advanced research paradigms, the experiences and methods of the “Two Leads” by Jiangsu Province and provide the whole country with replicable models and systematic measures. Under the strategic arrangements of Jiangsu provincial CPC committee and Jiangsu provincial government, the institute develops forward-looking theoretical studies as a think tank, which timely puts forward practical and theory-backed development policy proposals for the province, offering the provincial CPC and government high-quality policy-making advisory services.

  • Social Management Innovation Center of Jiangsu Province

    Social Management Innovation Center  


    The Social Management Innovation Center was established in November 2011. It is built on the foundation of the School of Social Behavior and Science and Heren Charity Academy, Nanjing University. Its mission is to promote research in social construction, social management and social services and to cultivate social management innovators and social service talents.  


    The center is committed to studying critical issues of particular relevance to controversies in public policy. To help policymakers make constructive decisions based on the best available information, the center has established partnership with many other institutions and organizations such as Jiangsu Civil Affairs Bureau, Jiangsu Branch of Red Cross Society of China, and Jiangsu Branch of China Charity Federation.  


    The center has as its workers approximately 100 master students and Ph.D. candidates who major in Social Work with various concentrations. Several research groups have been established to conduct work on specific issues such as the transformation of charity and the difficulties of community management. They have already had many publications.  


    The center has reached an agreement with the University of Southern California (USC), aiming at promoting international scientific and scholarly cooperation in several majors such as Social Work and Social Management.

  • “Green Development” Research Institute of Jiangsu Province

    “Green Development” Research Institute of Jiangsu Province  


    The “Green Development” Research Institute of Jiangsu Province was established in November 2010 at the authorization of the Society of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Jiangsu Province. The aims of the institute are to strengthen academic cooperation in green development, to promote research and to help make decisions in the area of green development. 


    Major scientists of the institute include Senior Researcher Niu Wenyuan, Professor Yu Hongxia and Professor Huang Xianjin. Currently, the chief scientist is Professor Huang Xianjin, from the School of Geographic and Oceanographic Sciences, Nanjing University.  


    Since its establishment, the institute has been in charge of major projects of the national social science foundation of China, key projects of philosophy and social science foundation of Jiangsu Province, projects of society of philosophy and social science of Jiangsu Province and some other research projects of the Ministry of Land and Resources, the Department of Land and Resources of Jiangsu Province and the Economic Information Committee of Jiangsu Province. Moreover, the research institute has strengthened the cooperation with University College London in UK (on regional governance) and University of Waterloo in Canada (on sustainable systems of food supply). It has also published a collection of books and completed research reports on green development in Jiangsu Province from 2000 to 2015, offering reference for provincial and ministerial governments.

  • Research Base of History and Culture of Jiangsu

    Jiangsu Historical and Cultural Research Base


    Jiangsu Historical and Cultural Research Base was founded in November 2011. It is one of the Policy-Making Consultation Research Bases approved by Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government. The base is located in Nanjing University, and its chief expert is Professor He Yun’ao, director of the Cultural and Natural Heritage Research Institute of Nanjing University.  


    The base has a strong research team with rich experience in decision-making advisory research, open research mechanisms, and complete databases so that it carries out longitudinal studies on overall, strategic and policy-related issues concerning Jiangsu’s cultural heritage protection and development. It provides relevant departments of the province with efficient, professional, timely research and consulting services. The base has become a think-tank institution for governmental policy-making consultation in the fields of Jiangsu’s history and cultural research, protection and using of cultural heritage. Several of its achievements have been incorporated into the decision-making system of relevant departments of the provincial government.


  • Base for Research on the Building of Local Party Cells in Jiangsu

    Grassroots Organization Building Research Base of Jiangsu Province  


    The grassroots organization is an integral part of the governing system in China. The building of local party cells and community-level governments is one of the key factors in the modernization of the governing ability. Founded in 2011 and managed by the School of Government, Nanjing University, the Grassroots Organization Building Research Base of Jiangsu Province is a joint project of Nanjing University, the organization department of Jiangsu provincial CPC committee, and Macro-Economic Research Institute of the State Development and Reform Commission of the People's Republic of China. Manned by full-time and part-time scholars of different age groups and academic backgrounds, the base has 15 researchers (4 of them are professors, and 5 are associate professors), Professor Zhu Guoyun being the chief expert.

      

    With an emphasis on cooperation between theoretical researchers and practical workers, the base conducts research on the building of local party cells and community-level governments. The base pursues theoretical innovation, offers public policy-making advisory service, and undertakes a dozen of projects on upgrading local party and government leaders. It is aimed at developing and reforming community-level governance and constructing community-level consultation and democracy. Researchers at this base have published more than 20 papers in prominent journals in China. Some of the papers are noted by provincial leaders and higher-level officials.

  • Jiangsu Research Base of Culture Industry

    Jiangsu Cultural Industry Research Base


    Jiangsu Cultural Industry Research Base was established in 2013. It is developed to study important theory-application and practical problems encountered in the development of cultural industry in Jiangsu Province. Its major task is to complete the research projects commissioned by Jiangsu provincial government and organize the activities amalgamated of industry, education and research.  


    The research base explores an effective model of cultural industry development and cultivates cultural industry research talents and management talents. It has a research team of doctoral supervisors, senior researchers and young scholars. All the academic leaders are well-known scholars in their respective research fields who have held important research projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Fund and the National Social Sciences Fund.  


    The research base has completed many research projects:

  • Collaborative Innovation Center of South China Sea Studies

    Collaborative Innovation Center of South China Sea Studies


    The Collaborative Innovation Center of South China Sea Studies at Nanjing University was founded in July 2012. In May 2013, it became one of the first collaborative innovation centers sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance.  


    The center was initiated by Nanjing University and has been greatly supported by the State Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the People’s Government of Hainan Province, and the State Oceanic Administration. It works in close collaboration with other research institutions, including the National Institute of South China Sea Studies, the Naval Command Academy, and Renmin University of China. Driven by the demands of major national policies and aimed at the defense of China’s maritime rights and security, the center seeks to develop basic research as well as research on applicable countermeasures on South China Sea issues, offers services to the nation’s strategic decision-making on these issues, and provides intellectual support for the nation’s development of “maritime power,” mainly through collaborative innovation between disciplines and institutes—namely, between Arts and Sciences, military and civilian organizations, universities and institutes, and between universities—which is enabled by system and mechanism innovation.  


    The center edits and publishes an academic journal Asia-Pacific Security and Maritime Affairs, which has become a representative academic frontier for the study of maritime security in China. In addition, the center, by organizing and publishing The South China Sea Papers and Research Reports on South China Sea Strategies, monitors the latest developments in the South China Sea situation and offers information to experts in the field. It has become a representative think tank in disseminating and communicating China’s South China Sea policies.

  • Institute of Nanjing Massacre History and International Peace Studies

    Institute of Nanjing Massacre History and International Peace Studies


    Established on March 1, 2016, the Institute of Nanjing Massacre History and International Peace Studies is one in the first group of nine provincial key advanced think tanks of Jiangsu Province. Professor Zhang Xianwen, who is from the History Department of Nanjing University, serves as the president of the institute, while Zhang Jianjun, the director of the Memorial Hall for the Victims of Nanjing Massacre by the Japanese Invaders, serves as the executive director. Co-founded by the Publicity Department of Jiangsu provincial CPC committee, the Publicity Department of Nanjing municipal CPC committee, and Nanjing University, the institute is managed and operated by the Memorial Hall for the Victims of Nanjing Massacre by the Japanese Invaders.


    The institute has recruited a first group of 44 experts, whose majors cover history, law, sociology, psychology, political science, and media. Under the institute there are the Research Center for Nanjing Massacre History, the Research Center for the History of Chinese People’s War against Japanese Aggression, the Research Center for “Comfort Women” Issues, the Research Center for Contemporary Japanese Politics, the Research Center for Peace Studies, the International Peace School, and other institutions.


    Standing at the height of history and future, the institute endeavors to make trans-regional, trans-disciplinary research and cooperation, to offer advice and suggestions to governmental offices, to provide reference information for the government in public decision-making, and to promote global awareness and concern for world peace.

    Jiangsu Yangtze River Industrial Economic Research Institute


    Yangtze River Industrial Economic Research Institute of Jiangsu was established in November 2015. As one of the nine high-end think-tanks in Jiangsu Province, it is mainly based on Jiangsu Council Research Office and Nanjing University.  


    The institute focuses on the process of China's modernization. Its mission is to promote research on industrial policy and competition policy, providing the government with suggestions for scientific and democratic decision-making. As a high-end think tank, it aims to build bridges between advisory suggestions and innovative ideas to guide public opinions, business services, and foreign communications. It takes on a new think tank style and presents a new image. Service, guidance and innovation is its motto which leads it to new scientific, standardized and systematic think tank construction with Chinese characteristics.  


    Since its establishment, the institute has been actively carrying out academic activities such as writing theoretical reports, holding academic conferences and providing decision-making advice to the government, enterprises and other social organizations.

    Zijin Media Think Tank



    Zijin Media Think Tank is a non-profit organization founded in April 2015. Its mission is to provide up-to-date information and analysis on people’s livelihood issues and social mentality in order to propose actionable ideas for policy making concerning economic, social and cultural development as well as to develop more intellectual products to facilitate open dialogues between China and other cultures.


    The think tank now consists of five research centers including the Center for Public Opinions and Social Mentality, Center for Internet and Media Development, Center for Social Risks and Public Policy, Center for Big Data and Social Computing and Center for Petition and Social Conflict. It sets out to combine the forces of the academia, government and media, to apply the innovative thinking of “Internet Plus” and big data analysis technology in conducting real-time tracking of public opinions and social mentality, to build early-warning mechanisms for social risks and to provide suggestions for policymakers to address controversial issues in society.


    Since its foundation, Zijin Media Think Tank has been active in a wide range of areas including releasing a series of research reports such as the Survey on the Major Trend of 2015 Chinese Stock Market and the Report on the Chinese Citizen’s Economic Confidence Index (2015-2016), organizing academic activities such as the Symposium on the Evaluation and Management of New-Type Think Tanks in China and launching poverty alleviation and rural construction projects.

  • Center of Chinese Think Tank Studies and Evaluation

    Center for Chinese Think Tank Studies and Evaluation (CCTTSE)



    The Center for Chinese Think Tank Studies and Evaluation, Nanjing University, was established in May 2015. It is a key research institute of the university and one of the key units supported by Jiangsu Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science, specializing in think tank studies and talents cultivation.  


    To meet the demands for think-tank governance of China and Jiangsu Province, the center undertakes various work such as collection and processing of data of think tanks, think-tank evaluation and management consulting with “opening, sharing and service” as its principle.  


    The center’s staff comprises 18 senior fellows including Yangtze River scholars and the New Century Talents of the Ministry of Education. It also has 15 graduate students. Sun Jianjun, a prominent expert for network measurement and big data, a Yangtze River scholar and dean of the School of Information Management, Nanjing University, serves as the center’s director. Professor LI Gang serves as the center’s acting director and chief expert.  


    The center developed the first information system for data management of think tanks in China, called the Chinese Think Tank Index (CTTI). It also translated and published some western think tank masterpieces, including Managing Think Tanks, A Capitol Idea, The Idea Brokers and Rand Corporation.  


    The center has signed a strategic agreement of cooperation with the Center for Think Tank Studies & Release of Guangming Daily and established a cooperation mechanism to carry out think tank research and evaluation. The two sides not only cooperate in data and evaluation of CTTI, but have also launched the compilation project of Guidance for Managing Chinese Think Tank, for which they held the “Forum for Chinese Think Tank Governance.” Besides, the center publishes Think Tank: Theory & Practice in cooperation with the National Science Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and this is the first Chinese peer-review journal focusing on think tank research.
