Professor Lyu Jian was appointed president of Nanjing University in January 2018.
Prior to this appointment, Professor Lyu served as deputy dean of Nanjing University’s Computer Science Department, deputy director of its Computer Software Institute, office administrator of its University Key Projects Construction, dean of the university graduate school, vice president and executive vice president of Nanjing University.
Professor Lyu was born in March 1960 in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, Han ethnicity, origin of family being Rongcheng, Shandong. He graduated from the Computer Science Department of Nanjing University in 1982 and joined the faculty of the same department in 1984. He received his doctorate in engineering in 1988 and became a professor, a doctoral supervisor and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Professor Lyu focuses on software methodology studies and has made important achievements in such areas as foundation theories, Internet-ware, new type of software platform and its application.
Lyu has also advanced a formal software development method of which the new mechanism of data decomposition could be used to deal with the complexity control of large-scale programming.
In addition, he has explored the software system in open network environments and put forward the Agent-based Internet-ware model, providing an Internet-oriented research method for software methodology studies.
Lyu has improved software collaboration technology in open environment. He has also led the research on a new type of software collaboration platform, which can support the development and operation of the application system in an open, dynamic and changeable environment.
Professor Lyu has won the first prize of the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education, the first prize of the Technological Invention Award of the Ministry of Education, and the second prize of the State Science and Technology Progress Award. He was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013. He was a member of the 12th National Committee of CPPCC and a deputy to the 13th National People’s Congress.
