The Chinese Contemporary Buddhist Art Exhibition was inaugurated on April 26 in the Art Gallery of Nanjing University in celebration of the university’s 115th anniversary.
The exhibit is co-hosted by Nanjing University, Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Chinese Culture Promotion Society of Jiangsu Province.
Present at the inauguration were Chen Huanyou, former Secretary of Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the CPC and honorary president of the Chinese Culture Promotion Society; General Fang Zuqi, former political commissar of Nanjing military region and honorary president of the Chinese Culture Promotion Society of Jiangsu Province; Gu Hao, former deputy secretary of Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the CPC and honorary president of the Chinese Culture Promotion Society of Jiangsu Province; Zhang Jianhua, president and CPC secretary of Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Gao Yijian, president of the Chinese Culture Promotion Society of Jiangsu Province, and other extramural guests.
Also attending the inauguration were Chen Jun, president of Nanjing University; Wu Weishan, curator of National Art Museum of China and president of the Academy of Fine Arts of Nanjing University; Zhu Qingbao, vice chancellor of Nanjing University and other university leaders.
Vice Chancellor Zhu Qingbao made a speech on behalf of the university.
The prosperous Buddhist art contributes to the development of the university’s campus culture, and the exhibition is an event of presentation and exchange of Chinese culture, said Zhu.
Zhang Jianhua explained in his speech the importance of displaying and spreading the Buddhist culture from the perspectives of culture, life and art.
Gao Yijian pointed out that this exhibition features characteristics of large scale, high standard and fine taste and is of far-reaching cultural significance.
Wu Weishan mentioned in his speech that Nanjing University possesses an indissoluble bond with Buddhism and that it is the university’s mission and responsibility to carry forward the fine traditional Chinese culture.

This exhibition is hosted by the Chinese Culture Research Institute of Nanjing University and the Academy of Fine Arts of Nanjing University and is co-sponsored by Jiangsu Artists Association, Jiangsu Calligraphers Association, Jiangsu Sculptors Association and the Buddhist Association of Jiangsu Province. Professors Lai Yonghai and Wu Weishan presided over the exhibition.
The Exhibition covers various forms of art that expresses the Buddhist culture, including scripture, painting, calligraphy and so on.
It is supported by artists from across the country and over 300 pieces of work are on display, including works by Master Xingyun, Rao Zongyi, Wu Weishan, Wei Tianchi, Yan Gongda, Lai Yonghai, Gao Yun, Zhou Jingxin, Sun Xiaoyun, Shi Xincheng and other artists.
The exhibit shows the achievements in contemporary Buddhist art and the expression of the Buddhist culture in contemporary context.
