​'Gratitude and Responsibility' : Nanjing University Awards 2016 Scholarships, Initiates 'Future Pillars' Program

Nanjing University held its “Gratitude and Responsibility” 2016 Scholarship Award Ceremony and launched the “Future Pillars” program on Xianlin Campus on December 11.


This year, the state, the school and various social organizations set up more than 170 scholarships at Nanjing University, totaling 40 million yuan awarded over 12,000 person-times.


The highest scholarship was US$60,000 a person, and the highest for freshmen was 200,000 yuan a person covering the entire four undergraduate years.



Zhang Yibin, chancellor of Nanjing University, reviewed the accomplishments made by Nanjing University over the past year, in such areas as the promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation, the construction of first-rate university and first-rate subjects, scientific research, talent training and so on.


He thanked people of all circles, at home and abroad, who have helped and supported the university’s development, and he congratulated the scholarships-winning students and encouraged them to be grateful and to shoulder their responsibilities.


As the university has entered into a critical period of the establishment of a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and Nanjing University style, Zhang stressed, it urgently needs the broad participation and long-term support of friends of all circles of society.


He added that Nanjing University will make best use of the support and help it has received to accelerate its development, to cultivate first-class talents to serve the country and society, and to contribute its high-level scientific fruition to the advancement of the nation and the world.



President Chen Jun and over 50 representatives of the donors issued the awards and scholarships to the students. Some scholarships donors also spoke at the ceremony and expressed their good wishes to the students.





At the ceremony, the gratitude of the scholarship winners was conveyed by videos, along with the stories of the students’ public welfare activities and their experiences of starting their own businesses.



The “Future Pillars” Program is a fund that supports student growth, and it was officially launched at the ceremony by President Chen Jun, Chancellor Zhang Yibin, Sun Libin, chair of Linkage Group, Meng Xiangsheng, vice president of Suning Commerce Group, and Zheng Gang, a distinguished NJU alumnus.



The “Future Pillars” Program, according to the university’s news center, is a key program aimed at cultivating students as the future pillars of the nation. Through the implementation of three plans in personality development, intelligence enhancement and culture-oriented enrichment, the program tries to establish in students the core values, that is, to develop in them a sense of social responsibility, a spirit of innovation and practical abilities.


The program is funded by the Pillar Growth Fund of Nanjing University. The fund, in fact, includes many sub-funds that support student growth in various areas, for instance, “Xu Xin International Exchange Fund,” “Linkage Student Leadership Fund,” “Suning Talent Growth Fund” and “Zheng Gang Student Association Development Fund.” It will include more of such funds as “Excellent Women’s Growth Fund” and “Public Charity Talents Fund.”


With the support and help from all sectors of society, the university will integrate all kinds of useful resources to cultivate the “future pillars” with an international vision, a Chinese spirit and an upright disposition fostered in Nanjing University’s education.
