Key Laboratory of Coast and Island Development (Nanjing University), Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Coast and Island Development originated in the Costal Research Group and the Marine Geomorphology and Sedimentology Research Laboratory founded at Nanjing University in the 1960s.In 1990, the laboratory became the National Pilot Laboratory of Coast and Island Development at the approval of the National Development and Reform Commission, the State Scientific and Technological Commission, and the Ministry of Education. In 2000, the laboratory was approved to be a Ministry of Education Key Laboratory. Its concept of development was agreed upon as Openness, Mobility, and Unity. In addition, it passed successfully the term evaluations organized by the Ministry of Education in 2004, 2009 and 2015 respectively.
Embedded in the theory of earth system sciences, the laboratory aims to the coastal ocean, namely, the whole land-sea transition zone, composing of the coastal zone, continental shelf, continental slope and continental rise.
With the advance of earth system sciences, the laboratory has also developed the research fields and made great achievements in these fields.
