NJU Holds 'Gratitude & Responsibility' Meeting to Award Year's Scholarships

Nanjing University held its “gratitude and responsibility” 2017 scholarship and grant award ceremony at the En Ling Theater, Xianlin Campus on the morning of December 10, 2017.    


More than a thousand officials, teachers and students attended the event, including over 20 members of the university’s board of trustees, award presenters from over 60 institutions that set up the awards, and dozens of representatives of enterprise and private donators.   


Also attending the ceremony were Chen Jun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and president of the university, Yang Zhong, executive vice chancellor of Nanjing University, Xue Hailin, vice president of the university, Wang Zhilin, vice president of the university, Wang Mingsheng, member of the university’s CPC standing committee and director of the committee’s publicity department, Guo Suiping, member of the university’s CPC standing committee and director of the committee’s organizational department, and leaders of the university’s schools and departments.

In his speech, Yang Zhong reviewed what Nanjing University has achieved over the past year in such areas as the work on entrepreneurship and innovation, the effort at building the first rate university and disciplines, and the work of research and innovation and talents cultivating.   


He expressed his gratitude to friends of all walks of life and all alumni at home and abroad for their assistance and support. 

 

It is the responsibility of the university’s teachers and students to aim high while doing solid work, to remain true to their original aspirations and to strive forward with gratitude, Yang said.    


He quoted Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, as saying at the 19th CPC National Congress, “A nation will prosper only when its young people thrive; a country will be full of hope and have a great tomorrow only when its younger generations have ideals, ability, and a strong sense of responsibility.”    


Yang encouraged the students to take the day of award winning as a starting point, make full use of the good conditions the university and society have provided, study hard, stay hungry of knowledge, learn to distinguish right from wrong, become perseverant in work, and make ourselves into successors and builders of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, never letting down the high expectations of teachers, alumni and others in society.    


He emphasized that it was Nanjing University’s responsibility to take root in China, to break ground, to educate students morally and to serve the country. The university will continue its step by step work at building the first rate university and disciplines in order to answer the general secretary’s call to build up Nanjing University.    


Finally, Yang expressed on behalf of the university his wish that friends of all walks of life and alumni at home and abroad could continue to give support and attention to the university’s development and make contributions to realizing the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.     


The ceremony, whose theme was gratitude and responsibility, comprised the gratitude part and the responsibility part.     


The gratitude part started with a video show on the profiles of representatives of scholarship and grant winners, followed by the awarding of Year 2017 scholarships and grants.      


President Chen Jun presented the National Scholarships and the People’s Scholarships to the representatives of their respective winners. Also presenting the awards were representatives of the over 60 award sponsors.    


In 2017, the government and various circles in society set 155 kinds of scholarships and grants in a total of 45.517 million yuan for students at Nanjing University.    


Altogether, 9,523 person-times received these awards.

The performance of the sand painting plus oral reading “A Letter from across the Ocean” introduced the origin of the “Mo Shaokui Scholarship,” which was a touching story featuring a devoted teacher.    


The show of drama poem with music and background painting “Doing a Favor to Younger Students and Being Grateful” unfolded the noble spirit of dedication and the aspiration of vitalizing education that manifested in Tang Zhongying and other members of the university’s board of trustees.      


In the second part of the ceremony, the responsibility part, another drama poem with music and painting titled “Strengthening Moral Education and Cultivating Students” briefed the profiles and spirit of dedication of Nanjing University’s scholars after whom scholarships, grants and funds are named.    


The oral reading “the Mission and Responsibility of the Youth” by students showed how they felt a sense of historical responsibility.       


With the support of people from all walks of life, Nanjing University set up a “Pillar Building Fund” at the end of 2016, which aims to implement the fundamental task of fostering morality and cultivating students, to explore and integrate high-quality resources, and to build “future pillars” with a world vision, a Chinese soul and Nanjing University’s professional standing.    


Many good achievements have already been made with the sub-funds supported by the Pillar Building Fund.     


To implement the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress, to follow Xi Jinping’s thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, and to strengthen moral education and promote students’ all-round development, Nanjing University has established a Students Development Support and Research Center, and its inaugural ceremony was held together with the award ceremony.    


President Chen Jun, another Chinese Academy of Sciences academician and Nanjing University professor Su Dingqiang, and honored guests Fang Rende, Wang Yixuan, Zhu Yongning, Qian Dongqi, and Zheng Gang jointly sprinkled “the first pot of gold” for the start-up of this center.

The awards ceremony ended up with the dance “Remaining true to original aspirations and Continuing to March Forward.”
