Hu Fuming

Hu Fuming was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu in July 1935. He entered into Peking University to study journalism in September 1955. After graduation he continued to study in the philosophy training program in Renmin University of China. In 1962, after graduating from Renmin University of China, he started to teach in the Department of Politics (which later was changed into the Department of Philosophy) in Nanjing University, where he became successively the Deputy Director, the Deputy Chair, associate professor and professor. From December 1982, he started to work in Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, and took positions successively as the Deputy Director of Publicity Department, the member of Standing Committee, the Chancellor of Provincial Committee Party School, the Chair of Federation of Social Sciences of Jiangsu Province, the Director of the Academy of Sciences of Jiangsu Province, the Deputy Chair of Provincial Political Consultative Conference, etc.. He is the main author of the famous article “Practice Is the Sole Criterion for Testing Truth,” published in Guangming Daily in May 11, 1978.

His main research interests are Marxist Philosophy and Modernization Theory of Socialism. He is the chief editor of Marxist Theory of Practice and the Philosophical Foundation of Deng Xiaoping Theory and Modernization of Southern Jiangsu Province. His representative works include Work Collection of Distinguished Scholars of Social Sciences in Jiangsu: Hu Fuming,“On the Basic Contradiction of Socialist Society”, “On the Dynamic Force of Social Development”, “Theory Is not the Criterion for Testing Truth”,“Interaction of Practice and Theory”,“On the Characteristics of Our Country’s Socialist Development” and so on. He has won many awards, including the special award for theoretical article offered by Guangming Daily (1984) for his article “Practice Is the Sole Criterion for Testing Truth”, the first prize for excellent philosophy and social science studies of Jiangsu Province in 1985, a golden medal for Millennium Alumni Academic Achievement honored by Nanjing University in 2002,.He has been nominated as one of the first “Jiangsu Famous Scholars of Social Sciences.”
