Xu Sumin 


Xu Sumin studied for a Bachelor in the Institute of Philosophy at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology from 1978 to 1981. He was approved to get the degree after 3 years and became a tutor in the university. During the year of 1983 to 1984, he published academic papers in both the Chinese and English version of Social Sciences in China.


From the autumn of 1984 to the summer of 2002, he worked in the Institute of Philosophy at Hubei Academy of Social Sciences. He was promoted to fellow in August 1992, and became the director of the Institute and associate director of the general academic committee. He was also an adjunct professor of Wuhan University. He published a series of books, such as On humanistic spirit etc. He was the co-writer of his master professor Xiao Jiefu’s book, The development of enlightenment thought in Ming and Qing dynasty and A critical Biography of Wang Fu-zhih.


He was invited to the Center for Studies of Chinese Thinkers at Nanjing University in September 2002. He studies and teaches predominantly in the areas, such as Chinese philosophy, history of Chinese thought, comparative studies of Chinese and Western philosophy and communications between Confucian and Christian. He is a chief of History of Chinese thought in the Ministry of Education. He has recently published A critical Biography of Li Zhi, A critical Biography of Gu Yanwu and History of comparative studies between Chinese and Western philosophy etc.
