Chen Xiaolv
Prof. Chen Xiaolv was born in Chengdu, Sichuan province. He studied for a B.A. in foreign language at Sichuan Normal University. Finished B.A. studies, he became the postgraduate of Prof. Jiang Mengyin, a Chinese prestigious scholar on British studies, and received his M.A. of History in 1985 and Ph.D. in 1988 at Nanjing University.
Being a teaching staff of history department since 1988, he went to Grinnell College, and later Yale University and Sussex University as a visiting scholar and continued his research. At present, as a professor of our history department and the doctoral supervisor, he is a LSWH (Leading Scholars in World History), the vice president of CBHA (China British History Association), the president of JSWHA (Jiang Su World History Association), the director of EU Centre at Nanjing University and the platform director of CNCIC (Chinese National Collaborative Innovation Center for the South China Sea).
Over the years, Prof. Chen has presided over a series of General or Key Research Projects of the National Social Science Fund, and other more than 10 research projects of the Ministry of Education or the governmental cooperation between China and EU. He has won many first and second prizes of the Outstanding Academic Achievements of the Ministry of Education, and many other leading prizes of the Outstanding Academic Research Achievements in Social Science and Arts of Jiangsu Province. He has published more than 10 academic books, including The Origins of British Culture and British Spirits (co-author), The Origin and the Development of British Welfare State, The Experiences of Third World and Developing Theories, Development and Hegemony, The History of the World Modernization (the volume of Western Europe), Industrial Models in the World Modernization and its Meaning to China, Twenty Century Britain (co-author), The Concise History of Germany (co-author), The Concise History of Australia (co-author) and so on. Furthermore, he published more than 80 papers on academic journals, like World History, Historiography Quarterly, Journal of Historical Science, Collected Papers of History Studies, Strategy and Management, Dushu, Social Sciences in China (Quarterly), Journal of Peking University (Philosophy and Social Sciences), Journal of Nanjing University(Philosophy and Social Sciences) and etc.
His discipline is one of the major academic centers on world history studies in China, especially on British history. Chen’s main research areas are the British welfare system, modernization studies and British intellectual history.
