Hu Yun'ao


He Yun’ao is a member of Faculty of History Department in Nanjing University, Professor and PhD Supervisor, Director of Cultural and Natural Heritage Institute in Nanjing University, chief editor of Popular Archeology. Professor He is awarded the Special Government Allowances of the State Council.


Professor He also serves concurrently as director of Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development Special Fund of China, deputy director of Society of Chinese Archeology,a scholar member of Chinese Numismatic Society, deputy president of Jiangsu Numismatic Society, managing deputy president of Society of Ancient Ceramics of Jiangsu, member of Jiangsu Historic Preservation Committee of Experts, member of Jiangsu Intangible Cultural Heritage Preservation Committee of Experts, member of Jiangsu Cultural Relics Appraisal Team of Experts, chief expert of Jiangsu Decision-making Consultation Centre and Jiangsu Research Base of History and Culture, leading expert of Nanjing Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee of Experts, member of degree and postgraduate education experts in the Ministry of Education database, member of experts in culture, science and technology innovation project in the Ministry of Science and Technology database, member of committee of experts of World Heritage (Chinese version) issued by World Heritage Centre, UNESCO, deputy director of China Democratic League Jiangsu Committee of Cultural Practices, etc.


 As the head of Cultural and Natural Heritage Institute in Nanjing University, Professor He, alongside his colleagues, has organized more than 160 research projects of cultural construction, proservation of cultural heritage, planning of urban and regional development, application for World Heritage List, etc., many of which directly provided professional services to the development of urban and regional cultural affairs and cultural industries. Professor He organized his work according to the national development strategy and the socio-economic and academic realities. Based on the integrated advantages in academic research in Nanjing University, most of the projects participated by Professor He were carried out under the entrustment from government departments and specialized organizations on national, provincial and municipal levels. Professor He’s work has been highly admired by state departments and various entrusting organizations from different parts of China. Professor He contributed significantly in the successful application for UNESCO’s World Heritage List of Xiaoling Tomb of the Ming Dynasty as the leader of committee of experts. Professor He’s recent participants in application projects include City Walls of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Wuxi Huishan Ancestral Temples, Maritime Silk Road (Relics in Nanjing), Ancient City Walls in Shouxian, Anhui, City Walls of the Ming Dynasty in Fengyang, Anhui, Groups of buildings of Republic China in Nanjing, Tangzha Historic Industrial Relics,Yixing Zisha, etc., All of which were successfully included in World Heritage tentative list in China. A series of academic research projects under the leadership of Professor He had consecutively won more than 30 awards including “Top Ten New Archeology Findings in the year of 2000”, 2nd in the National Award for Outstanding Urban Planning, 2nd in the National Award for Advancement in Mapping, 1st in the Jiangsu Province Award for Advancement in Mapping, 2nd in the 12th Jiangsu Province Award for Excellence in Philosophy and Social Science, 2nd in “China Academy of Urban Planning and Design CAUPD Award”, 1st in the Jiangsu Province Award for Excellent Projects in Social Science, etc. Professor He himself obtained “Baosteel’s Award for Outstanding Teachers”, “1st Jiangsu Province Award for Ten Outstanding Figures in Chinese Culture Studies”, “Nanjing University Award for Contributions in Arts & Humanities. ” 


 Professor He has published more than 150 academic articles concerning cultural heritage, history and archeology, including “Introduction to Cultural Heritage Studies”. Professor He’s publication of more than 20 monographs including Eaves Tiles and Buildings of the Six Dynasties, Culture of the Six Dynasties: Archeology Research and Findings, Culture of the Three Gorges, etc. Professor He’s academic findings also had significant influence on relative studies in South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, etc. Professor He has been invited to give lectures on his research overseas for several times, thus improving international communications in cultural studies.


Professor He has been an active participant in disseminating scientific knowledge in the common society. In his earlier years, he was chief editor of the important journal in Arts & Humanities: Southeast Culture, promoting the journal’s overseas influence; more recently, Professor He co-founded the annual of Papers on Culture of the Yangtze River with more than 100 articles published in July of 2013, Professor He founded the monthly magazine Popular Archeology with wide popularity; websites and newspapers such as http://ccnh.cn and Intangible Heritage are other platforms of disseminating knowledge and ideas about preserving cultural heritage and advanced culture founded by Professor He. Professor He has also actively organized writing and editing of books including Source Books of Cultural Relics (under the commission of Gansu People’s Publications), Explanations and Analysis of World Heritage(under the commission of Cultural Relics Press), The Picture Dictionary of China’s National Treasures (under the commission of Shandong Picture Paper’s Press), etc.  


Professor He has undertaken numerous jobs in organizing academic events. In 2003 he founded “Symposium of World Heritage” with seven symposiums held in Nanjing and Macau, as well as the publication of paper anthology from the symposiums. Later on he successfully organized “Lectures on Archeology and Cross-cultural Cultural Heritage”, “Workshop of Female Archeology and Heritage Studies”, “Symposium of Sino-EU Cultural Heritage Studies”, “Symposium of Nanjing Cultural Development”, “Symposium of Cultural Heritage Preservation and Sustainable Development in China”, etc.


 Professor He was invited to share his academic visions with leaders of CCP and the Chinese Central Government including Zeng Qinghong, Li Lanqing and Jiang Zemin. He was also invited to give lectures to decision makers in the provincial and municipal government with high admiration of his work.
