Hu Axiang


Hu Axiang received his BA in Liberal Arts and MA in History at Fudan University relatively from 1980 to 1984 and from 1984-1987. In 1987, Axiang returned to Nanjing University, where he completed his Ph.D. in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature from 1993 to 1998 and has worked in the History Department till now. After years working as assistant professor and associate professor, he was promoted to full professor in 2001. In 2014, Axiang was assigned to be the vice dean of the School of History, Nanjing University.


Axiang teaches predominantly in the areas of Medieval Chinese history and literature, Chinese historical geography, Chinese toponymy and administrative division as well as local history of Nanjing. So far he has published over 200 articles and completed more than 30 monographs, including Weizai Siming: Zhongguo Gujin Chengwei Yanjiu (Splendid Names: A Research on the titles of “China” in History), Liuchao Jiangyu yu Zhengqu Yanjiu (Research on the territory and administrative division of Six Dynasties China), Zhonggu Wenxue Dili Yanjiu (Research on Medieval Chinese Literary Geography), Dongjin Nanchao Qiaozhou Junxian yu Qiaoliu Renkou Yanjiu, (Research on Immigration, Immigrant Prefectures and Countries of the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties China) Zhengming Zhongguo: HU Axiang Shuo Guohao (Justifying the names of China: Analyzing Chinese Dynastic titles by Axiang HU)


Axiang serves as the curator of the Oriental Metropolitan Museum and the director of Nanjing Six Dynasties Culture Research Center since 2014. He is also a board member of historical geography committee of Association of Chinese Geography, Vice-chair of Association of Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties of Chinese history, Chair of Six Dynasties Research Association of Jiangsu and a member of Early Medieval China Group in America.
