Dong Jian


Prof. Dong Jian was born in Shandong Province in 1936.He was admitted to Beijing Institute of Russian (now Beijing Foreign Studies University) in 1956. Then he transferred to Chinese Department of Nanjing University. He received his B.A in 1962 and M.A in 1965.


He is an Honorary Senior Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nanjing University. And his previous positions also include Chair of the Department of Chinese Literature, Dean of School of Liberal Arts and Vice President of Nanjing University.


He has been teaching at Nanjing University since1965. Meanwhile, he has been engaged in both teaching and research of Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature, focusing on the relationship of this subject and the Modern Cultural Enlightenment. He has made remarkable achievements in the studies about the drama. For example, The history of Chinese Modern Drama (1989) edited by him and Prof. Chen Baichen who was a drama specialist was awarded the first prize of Social Science of Jiangsu Province, and has achieved the Special-class Award of National Excellent Teaching Materials.


His representative works are The creative course of Chen Baichen (1985), Literature and History,The biography of Tian Han (1996), Drama and Times (2004).
