Shen Yang


Shen Yang (born in December, 1955), is a Distinguished Professor of Yangtse River Scholar granted by the Ministry of Education, China. He received a M.A in Chinese Linguistics from East China Normal University in 1990, and a Ph.D from Peking University in 1993. In 1996, he went to City University of Hong Kong for postdoctoral research.


He taught at Peking University from 1993 to 2011. Between 2001 and 2011, he directed Chinese Linguistics department. He was appointed as one of the first Distinguished Professorson Humanities by Peking University. He was a research professor of Harvard University, Leiden University, International Institute of Asian Studies of Netherland, Academia Sinica in Taiwan, Chinese University Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytech University, and the University of Macao.


Since 2011, he has been working at Nanjing University. He is the dean of the Linguistic Department of Chinese Language and Literature School, and the head of China Center for Linguistic and Strategic Studies at Nanjing University.


He is notable for his study on syntax and semantics of Modern Mandarin and linguistics theories. He has over 100 publications in linguistics journals and a dozen of monographs.His achievements have won national academic awards four times, national teaching awards 12 times, and Beijing City or Jiangsu Province academic awards 15 times.


He has hosted more than 20 projects, including Key Project of National Social Sciences Grant, Key Project of the Ministry of Education, Key Projects of National Language Committee, International Cooperative Grant (Dutch NWO, Dutch KNAW, Hong Kong RGC) and so on.


He is the supervisor of M.A and Ph.D candidates. Until 2016, he has guided more than 130 Ph.D or M.A graduate students.
