​NJU Signs Memo with UK Partner, Local Gov’t on Setting up Medical Study Institute

The “Memorandum of Cooperation on the Joint Medical Research Institute between Nanjing University and King’s College London” was signed by Nanjing University, King's College London, and Jiangbei New District Administration on Gulou Campus of Nanjing University on May 4, 2018.   


Attending the memo signing ceremony were Sir Robert Lechler, Senior Vice President/Provost (Health) of KCL and Executive Director of King’s Health Partners, Tayyeb Shah, DVP Global Business Development, King’s College London, Lan Shaomin, mayor of Nanjing, Luo Qun, standing member of Nanjing Municipal CPC Committee and deputy secretary of Jiangbei New District CPC Committee, Zhang Yibin, chancellor of Nanjing University, Lv Jian, president of Nanjing University and other leaders.    


Chen Jianqun,  Associate Vice-President of Nanjing University and Dean of Jinlin College, presided over the ceremony.

Before signing the memo, additional discussions on details of cooperation were held between Nanjing University and King’s College and between Nanjing Municipal Government and King’s College.

At the ceremony, President Lv Jian extended greetings to all the guests on behalf of the university.   


“Health is a necessity for all-around human development and serves as a foundation of economic and social development,” said President Lv. “For this reason, life science, medicine, sanitation and health are areas of common concern for all the world’s top universities.”    


Nanjing University is now at a crucial stage of world-class university construction, said Lv.    


In 2017, it was listed as one of those at A-level world-class university construction, and 16 of its disciplines such as clinical medicine are in the top 1% of ESI (Essential Science Indicators) in the world.    


The cooperation with King’s College is a significant move of constructing a Double First-Rate university and also an important opportunity to increase the internationalization of the university, promote the growth of biomedicine and other related disciplines and join the development of the trend of national and local innovation.   


Nanjing University, together with King's College London and Jiangbei New District will forge and strengthen ties of complementary and win-win cooperation, Lv added.

Robert  Lechler expressed his appreciation of the great support and investment of Nanjing Municipal Government and Jiangbei New District Administration.   


“The cooperation connected King's College London and Nanjing University and enable the two to make progress together,” he said. “Both schools have time-honored history and have the concepts of complementary development. These will serve as important factors in the future success of the research institute.   


He expressed his hope that the institute will reach the top level of the world, will find cure for important diseases of humankind, and will drive the development of contemporary medicine.

Luo Qun, deputy secretary of Jiangbei New District CPC Committee, pointed out that the signing ceremony marked the beginning of the innovative, coordinated and win-win cooperation at a new stage.

The memorandum was signed by Tan Zhemin, Robert Lechler and Luo Qun, respectively, on behalf of Nanjing University, King's College London and Jiangbei New District.   


The signing was witnessed by Tayyeb Shah, Lan Shaomin, Zhang Yibin, Lv Jian and others.    


It is planned that the institute will become the best in China and one of the top in the world.    


During its construction, the institute will draw on advantageous resources in medicine, research and teaching from King’s College London and Nanjing University and collaborate with the institute of clinical medicine of Nanjing University-Drum Tower Hospital.   


The institute will be set up in the International Healthcare Town of Jiangbei New District, carry out its operation with the integration of medicine, teaching and research, and explore a new way of health care that meets the international standards.
