Nanjing University hauled in six first prizes and five other accolades and was one of the biggest winners at the 2018 Jiangsu Science and Technology Award Ceremony, held in Nanjing on the morning of May 10, 2019.
Handing out the awards at the meeting were Provincial CPC Secretary Lou Qinjian, Governor Wu Zhenglong, CPPCC Chairperson Huang Lixin and other leaders of the provincial CPC committee, people’s congress, government and CPPCC.
Executive Vice Governor Fan Jinlong presided over the ceremony, and Vice Governor Ma Qiulin read out the provincial government's decision on the 2018 Jiangsu Science and Technology Awards.
NJU President Lyu Jian attended the ceremony, and Professor Shi Bin, of the university's School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, had his seat at the rostrum as an award presenter but was also conferred the provincial honor himself for his research that had won him the first prize of the 2018 National Science and Technology Progress Award.

Of a total of 276 projects winning the 2018 Jiangsu Science and Technology Awards, 45 were awarded the first prizes and five were winners of the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.
Nanjing University once again won a lion’s share of the awards, which included six first prizes, two second prizes, two third prizes and one international cooperation award.
The five first-prize winning projects from Nanjing University are as follows:
Key technology and application of big data service systems and platforms, led by Professor Chen Guihai, of the Department of Computer Science and Technology;
Fine preparation, new optical effects and application of metal micro-nano-structure materials, led by Professor Wang Zhenlin, of the School of Physics;
Application of intelligent nanometer materials in sensitive electro-generated chemi-luminescence biosensing and controlled drug delivery, led by Professor Zhu Junjie, of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering;
Utilization and industrialization of high-efficiency catalysts that meet the National Stage V Emission Standard in the after-treatment process for standard heavy-duty diesel engines, led by Professor Dong Lin, of the School of the Environment;
Basic and clinical research of the treatment of severe Asherman Syndrome by collagen scaffold loaded with stem cells for endometrial regeneration, and the basic and clinical research of the treatment of osteoarthritis, led, respectively, by Professors Hu Yali and Jiang Qing, of the affiliated Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital of the Medical School.
Professor Xiao Min, of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, won the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award and was the third consecutive winner from Nanjing University to receive this honor.

Nanjing University has in recent years attached great importance to problem-solving in its scientific and technological work and has kept an eye on the international academic frontiers and the major needs of the country.
The university has carried out several innovation programs such as the “10-100-1000 Program for Scientific and Technological Innovation” and the “Program for Educating and Training Outstanding Engineers (PETOE),” and researchers in many areas of study have been striving to overcome some core scientific and technological difficulties with their innovative research findings.
This problem-oriented approach has made important contributions to building the Nanjing University in a new era and building Jiangsu into an innovation-driven province.
